Optical Engineer

Product Design

  • Build bench-top prototype systems and verify optical performance.
  • Conduct optical design and verification for OTDR, OPS, WSS and other fiber-optic devices.
  • Run optical verification testing to access product feasibility and performance expectations including margining.
  • Optimize optical designs of existing products to reduce cost, improve performance, simplify processes, and improve manufacturing yield.
  • Troubleshoot and solve optical performance related issues in various product development phases.
  • Recommend, devise, plan, and execute engineering studies and projects to solve problems discovered and / or as assigned.
  • Determine, develop and implement new methods, technologies, and processes that improve performance, cost, or deliveries of existing products.
  • Initiate interactions with suppliers on optical component specifications and sample procurement.
  • Provide technical support to Sales and Marketing.
  • Keep abreast of and recommend new technologies with consideration of the applicability and viability to OTDR and WSS markets.
  • Support special projects as required.
  • Report on projects and make recommendations to Management.

Support of overseas design and manufacturing activities

  • Travel overseas to work with the design teams during critical phases of development.
  • Work with globally located manufacturing teams to realize test fixtures for product manufacture.

Education & Experience

  • PhD or other advanced degree in Optics, Physics, Material Science or equivalent. MS ok if supplemented by relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience with designing, diagnosing, and implementing optics alignment systems.
  • Hands-on experience in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently and / or with a team.
  • Ability to recommend and implement product improvements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Data analysis skills in Excel or other software tool

Skills

  • Working knowledge of optical systems, fiber-optic components, devices, and associated hardware
  • Expertise with OTDR or related optical systems is a plus.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with optical alignment and testing
  • Leadership and the ability to work highly independently with minimal guidance from supervisor on specific tasks.
  • Creative, analytical and structured problem-solving capabilities
  • Able to work and deliver on aggressive schedule.

  • Self-starter, highly motivated, dedicated and teamwork oriented.
  • Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment.
  • Fluency in Mandarin is a plus as most project require collaboration with our China engineering and manufacturing locations.

Working Conditions

Role will require extensive collaboration with our international team and off hour meeting attendance will be necessary to aid the global engineering team.

This will require flexibility in the individuals schedule to accommodate meetings in time zones such as Asia and Europe.

Overseas travel to Asia may be required to work with the design and NPI teams during critical phases of development.
