POSITION DETAILS

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Student Disabilities Services Director is a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and oversees the office for Student Disabilities Services, the Assistive Technology Center and the CUNY / LEADS Program.

The Director of Student Disabilities Services plans, develops policies, and ensures the delivery of services for students with disabilities at Bronx Community College.

The Director of Student Disabilities Services (SAS) works collaboratively with campus stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), section 504 and other State and local policies to facilitate academic success, self-advocacy, and self-directed learning for students with disabilities.

The Director ensures that the mission and vision of the department is met and is aligned with divisional, institutional, and system-wide goals and objectives.

The Director for Student Disability Services will :

  • Develop and oversee the Office of Disability Services (ODS)
  • Supervise institutional compliance with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and with other federal and state regulations concerning students with disabilities
  • Direct outreach and service activities of the ODS
  • Oversee the student reasonable accommodations process as outlined in CUNY's Procedures for Implementing Reasonable Accommodations and Academic Adjustments including reviewing documentation of disability, including psychological, medical, academic and educational assessments and recommending reasonable accommodations for students, engaging in an interactive process, with the goal of finding an acceptable accommodation or academic adjustment, when necessary and in a confidential manner, consulting with appropriate college officials, such as the instructor or Provost, to determine program requirements and appropriate accommodations, and providing students with timely documentation of a grant or denial of the request either stating the accommodation or academic adjustment to be provided, or for denials, the reason(s) the request was denied
  • Oversee the Assistive Technology Center to ensure the delivery of services and other supports are provided to meet the needs necessary for reasonable accommodations for students
  • Identify students’ needs and refer to other departments and social service agencies, when appropriate
  • Develop and implement program orientations and other transition and success activities for students with disabilities
  • Develop disability awareness curriculum for faculty and staff promoting enhanced disability inclusion, community awareness and retention for students with disabilities
  • Act as a liaison, advocate and resource person for students with disabilities.
  • Identify and collaborate with public and private entities that provide services, assistance or information to students with disabilities
  • Manage the database system for monitoring and reporting relevant data, student needs and effectiveness of service delivery for program improvement purposes

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required; Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Disability Services, or related field of study preferred.
  • Experience working in academic, career advisement, evaluation, and assessment with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Should demonstrate proficiency in computer and database skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other relevant legislation pertaining to higher education and disability.
  • Proven track record of community engagement and outreach to multiple constituent groups.
  • Commitment to furthering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and social justice causes.
  • Knowledge of Accommodate, Brightspace and Navigate preferred.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides administrative oversight, visionary leadership and broad direction for all aspects of a unit supporting students with special needs.

Develops a comprehensive program serving students with disabilities to ensure their retention and academic success

Serves as the primary resource related to campus student disability issues and works collaboratively to identify, facilitate, and implement a vast array of student support services

Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies

Manages program and administrative support staff, including professionals such as Sign Language Interpreters and Disability Accommodations specialists

Prepares long- and short- range plans and budgets, and monitors and reports performance related to goals

Develops and implements program assessment plan to evaluate program delivery of services, student learning outcomes, and student satisfaction

Generates campus-wide programming for students with disabilities and to increase sensitivity throughout the college community

May manage other student affairs programs serving a variety of student communities

Performs related duties as assigned.
