Position Summary

Career Interest : The Pharmacy Operations Manager fulfills a leadership role in the Department of Pharmacy by managing and leading pharmacy personnel in the successful completion of daily operations.

This role requires exceptional leadership and management skills, as well as strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with all members of the organization.

The Pharmacy Operations Manager will be responsible for significant portions of pharmacy operations and / or finances as well as being directly responsible for personnel management and operational success of the department.

The Pharmacy Operations Manager may report to either Pharmacy Assistant Director or Director of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities :

  • Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide care / service safely and efficiently for the care of each patient.
  • Coordinates the compounding of, dispensing of, and record keeping related to medications for all patients. Coordinates timely drug distribution from the generation of the medication order until administration of the medication using a team approach to empower pharmacy staff.
  • Coordinates the provision of patient-focused pharmaceutical care through the following functions : rational, safe and cost-effective drug therapy management, patient education, drug and poison information, procurement of pharmaceuticals and active participation on the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Provides effective leadership to the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Able to strategically identify, internalize and communicate the critical success factors necessary for the Pharmacy to support organizational goals.
  • Serves as an effective communicator of the organization's vision and goals and the Pharmacy Department's role in achieving those.
  • Expresses ideas clearly and effectively (gaining agreement and / or understanding), by adjusting language, terminology and style to the characteristics and needs of the audience as well as the venue for the communication.
  • Manages his / her responsibilities in a way that supports the achievement of departmental goals.
  • Works effectively with others in the management team to accomplish organizational goals and to identify and resolve problems at the departmental level.
  • Skillfully administers, directs and allocates all organizational resources.
  • Strives to remove barriers in achieving excellent pharmaceutical care by developing quality assurance criteria for pharmacy activities, assuring accountability and facilitating effective communication relative to these initiatives.
  • Monitors departmental productivity and prepares reports as required. Adapts to meet service, quality, and cost expectations utilizing data.
  • Participates in Hospital committees and interdisciplinary efforts to enhance medication use and cost, quality and service initiatives to improve patient care.

Including, but not limited to : Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Subcommittees; Medical Director Hospital Director Partnerships

  • Effectively uses the appropriate financial concepts and tools to analyze situations and make financial decisions that support the achievement of short and longer-term departmental objectives.
  • Ensures budget goals are met and works with Hospital Administration on budget management.
  • Conducts pharmaceutical procurement and resource utilization with economic and clinical consideration.
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in leading the unit / team towards it goals. Models appropriate values maintaining and promoting social, ethical and organizational norms.
  • Supports the ongoing development of Pharmacy staff in areas of responsibility.
  • Actively participates in local, regional and national professional organizations to facilitate networking and benchmarking.
  • Creates and communicates the "big picture" understanding of the hospital and works to ensure the Pharmacy supports the organization's desired competitive position.
  • Identifies opportunities and needs for new or enhanced pharmacy services to support the mission of the organization.
  • Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to develop an unit / team-wide spirit and intra-team and inter-team cooperation.
  • Maintains focus on all key stakeholders and supports the unit / team ability to deliver on all valid stakeholder expectations.
  • Assures compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards relative to the acquisition, storage, handling, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals and the provision of pharmaceutical care.
  • Completes all aspects of personnel management for Pharmacy staff in areas of responsibility.
  • Identifies personal professional development needs and maintains a plan for continued growth.
  • Supports the educational mission of the Hospital and Department of Pharmacy.
  • Non-essential Responsibilities
  • Contribute to KU pharmacy department publications.
  • Prepare a poster presentation for a national pharmacy association meeting.

Share professional expertise by providing an educational lecture or presentation as part of one of the following :

  • KUMC Grand Rounds
  • Local, state, or national pharmaceutical association meeting
  • School of Pharmacy classroom setting
  • Nursing Education and Development program
  • Outreach program
  • Oher continuing education event
  • Participate in a research project.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required :

Graduate of a Bachelors or Doctorate degree in Pharmacy

Pharmacist licensure in state of primary practice site required within the first 120 days from start date

Supervisory and management experience in a large tertiary care hospital setting and / or completion of a residency program that requires these skills.

BLS Certification

Preferred :

  • Master’s Degree in Pharmacy, Health Administration or Business Administration
  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy residency
  • Membership in regional & national pharmacy organization(s).
