The College of Medicine, Proteomics Facility is seeking an Associate Research Scientist / Engineer to conduct highly technical and specialized scientific research by independently securing funding;
performing research experiments, simulations and theoretical investigations; analyzing data; and disseminating research findings.
Key areas of responsibility include experiments, simulations, modeling or theoretical investigations; data / research analysis and evaluation;
dissemination of research results; research proposals / grants; service; and human resources / supervision. Percent Time : 100% Duties to include : Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations : Initiate proteomic and bioinformatic research design and methodology.
Originate design, research conduct, and coordination of projects using proteomics and bioinformatics. Maintain core equipment as needed.
Create documentation of methods, approaches, and practices as required. Oversee data management. Develop hypotheses to be tested and select methodology.
Work independently on complex research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator, as well as the Director of the Proteomics Facility or the Director of the Cores.
Data / Research Analysis and Evaluation : Analyze data for relevance and data integrity, as well as perform analysis of proteomic data and communicate findings and forecast of success to users.
Perform advanced data analysis techniques. Maintain critical computational resources (software, computers) and develop reporting standards and protocols.
Find / adapt or develop new methods and applications of existing data analysis techniques that are in reach of the facilities' capabilities.
Dissemination of Research Results : Will communicate with users throughout the project to set expectations and evaluation of how they are filled.
Complete analysis, figures, and editing on projects for co- or first-authored publications. May prepare and submit first author manuscripts for publication.
Curate data storage. Organize experiment outcome data and presentation of results to provide to the users. May contribute to public data archives or other resources;
e.g., software, models, or on-line tools to support scientific research. Attend regional and national meetings to promote research findings, support funding efforts, and keeping abreast of new and advancing techniques that may be beneficial to the facility.
Research Proposals / Grants : May as co-PI or co-I, contribute to research proposals and funding agency reports. May write research proposal to obtain independent funding as PI.
Provide guidance and content for grant proposals for other investigators Select and purchase equipment as needed. Service : Seek leadership opportunities appropriate to the scientific discipline, which may include serving as a session chair or organize sessions at professional meetings May serve on departmental or University committees.
May organize outreach efforts in alliance with funding sources. Provide letters of support for grant proposals outlining the capabilities of the facility that are relevant to the proposed aims.
Review manuscripts and research proposals, suggesting modifications based on the data analysis and general scientific and publication standards.
Consult and collaborate with the research community on current and / or future projects. Provide tours for visiting students and faculty.
Human Resources / Supervision : May mentor graduate students. Help instruct users on proteomics methods and data analysis.
Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved. Required Qualifications : A Doctoral degree in Chemistry or Biology or relevant field is required.
3 years or more of proteomic experience is required with specific experience with label-free quantitative proteomics and determination of post-translational modifications.
Computational skills for data analysis using quantitative proteomics workflows are required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
