ROLE SUMMARY
Responsible for capturing accurate, timely cancer-related health information for every patient with a diagnosis of malignancy, or with a diagnosis of certain benign CNS diseases and following those patients at least once a year for life.
The Certified Tumor Registrar will code the data collected using the current and appropriate rules according to the American College of Surgeons / Commission on Cancer, and the most current and appropriate requirements of the Washington State Cancer Registry, and other applicable regulatory body.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Abstracting :
- Locates paper and electronic health information to be abstracted.
- Codes, stages, and abstracts all cases of cancer and certain benign tumors initially seen, diagnosed, and / or treated at MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital l and its entities.
- Performs data entry utilizing specialized software.
- Maintains compliance with Cancer Registry related policies and procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge of staging, coding, and abstracting standards and requirements.
- Obtains and accurately records pertinent core information from records, including demographic characteristics, history of cancer, diagnostic procedures, stage, extent of disease and treatment into cancer database.
- Participates in the quality management of the registry data and activities.
- Maintains abstracting within guidelines of ACOS (i.e., 4-6 months from current month).
- Compiles data and generates reports for special studies.
- Assists in retrieving and compiling data for preparation of annual reporting.
- Assists in completing the American College of Surgeons Patient Care Evaluations.
- Assists in Survey Application Record for Commission on Cancer Survey.
Data Entry / Retrieval :
- Enters abstract information and follow-up data into computer with accuracy and efficiency.
- Development of procedures and / or forms for efficient data entry / retrieval.
Follow up :
- Update cases as they are re-admitted for additional initial course of treatment and / or subsequent treatment.
- Ensure hospital follow-up remains current.
- Assist with monthly follow-up letters when time permits.
- Assist with patient / relative contact in courteous manner when needed.
- Attends meetings and participates in committees as necessary to provide communication representation from the department.
- Attends Cancer Conferences as needed.
- Utilizes equipment, resources, working time, and supplies adequately.
- Works constructively to address quality, revenue or efficiency issues within department.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship with other departments as well as other disciplines in the medical community and those associated with research.
QUA L IFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS :
Education : Associate’s Degree required. Education in an allied health program preferred. Knowledge of Medical terminology, coding, anatomy, and physiology preferred.
The incumbent will be expected to acquire and maintain current certification and meet continuing education requirements.
Experience : Medical records management or healthcare clinical experience preferred. Knowledge of current ICD-O coding, AJCC Staging, Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards, Multiple Primary and Histology coding and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer guidelines preferred.
Licenses / Certificates / Registration : Certified Tumor Registrar license required within 3 years of employment.
