A Peer Support Specialist uses his or her personal history and experience with behavioral health challenges to support, guide, coach, and mentor adolescents and young adults who are transitioning into independence.
This position is responsible for observing policies, procedures and safeguards to protect the privacy of health information in compliance with the HIPAA Privacy (Privacy Rule).
Essential Functions of the Position :
- Use of personal experience of recovery to help youth succeed.
- Collaborate with youth's treatment team to support recovery and independence.
- Provide one-on-one or group activities designed to share experiences, build relationships, enhance competency, and develop community living skills.
- Maintain frequent contact with youth in order to provide support and guidance.
- Encourage the youth participation in wellness and recovery activities.
Measurement :
Maintains a minimum productivity target rate of 80%.
Position Requirements :
Minimum Qualifications :
- At least 18 years of age.
- GED or High School diploma.
- Competence to provide peer support services by virtue of 1) having experienced or witnessed behavioral health issues in your life or in your family and 2) a willingness to share this experience to support.
- Understanding of the behavioral health service delivery system based on your experience as a consumer or family member.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
- Ability to interact positively and professionally with consumers, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to complete service documentation for billing.
Physical Requirements : Ability to engage in sedentary and physical work, such as consumer and agency activities. Ability to communicate verbally, both in person and over the telephone.
Working Conditions : Work is performed in a community mental health center office setting and in the community.
Other Requirements : Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification, continual proof of a valid Alaska Driver's License, maintain current personal vehicle insurance and registration on personal vehicle(s) used for company business, maintain a violation free driving record for the past 1 year, and maintain satisfactory criminal background record.
