Job Description

This position carries out the organization's mission, vision, and values in building relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.

This position will require individuals to be organized and focused on the goal of positioning the YMCA as the community’s favorite and best swimming instructor.

Hands-on leadership, staff supervision and training, program development, and most importantly member service are the primary functions of the job.

Qualifications

1. Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in aquatics and exhibit a broad range of aquatic programs.

2. In addition, this person must have general knowledge of pool mechanics with ability to trouble shoot pool pump breakdowns, budgeting, equipment, and facility management, supervision of staff, planning, and organization.

3. Current Lifeguard certification and obtain any other certifications required for job.

4. Four years of experience in training and leading staff.

5. Budgeting and department fiscal management is a plus.

6. High degree of human relation skills : Ability to effectively communicate and manage information to peers, staff, and volunteers in a prompt and timely fashion.

7. Ability to establish, collaborate, and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers, schools, and general public.

8. Exemplify YMCA ideals, leadership qualities, and a professional image.

9. A high working knowledge of computers : MS Word, MS Excel, and database management.

10. A four-year college degree is preferred; will accept commensurate experience.

11. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem solve and possess effective time management skills.

Essential Functions

1. Plans, implements, schedules, and evaluates classes including : youth and adult swim, parent-tot, pre-school, masters, lifeguard training, and splash.

2. Employs, trains, and leads aquatic personnel and recruits volunteers when necessary. Coaches and mentors staff and volunteers to succeed.

Reviews and evaluates staff and volunteers on a regular schedule and gives positive feedback and constructive criticism.

Provides in-service training and conducts regular staff meetings.

3. Creates, develops, and markets an effective member-centered program which meets the needs of the community. Assists with the interpretation and communication of program standards to volunteer policy committees and to the Branch Board.

4. Provides support and active leadership for the annual fundraising campaign. May staff a team or division.

5. Prepares and manages an annual budget.

6. Conducts surveys and focus groups and uses other techniques to maintain a constant feedback stream from participants and users.

Responds appropriately and proactively to member concerns. Effective communication from the department is key to members' satisfaction and member commitment to the Y.

7. Other duties as assigned.
