Sergeant Detective - Public Safety

Responsible to oversee and supervise the work, performance and assignments of detectives assigned to the BMC Public Safety Department Detectives Division.
Ensures all crimes occurring on BMC owned, operated or occupied properties are investigated. Coordinates with external law enforcement agencies, as appropriate to ensure completeness and coordination of resources and actions.
Coordinates and investigate activities within BMC involving criminal, non-criminal and internal investigations under the direction of the Manager of Operations.
Supervises the work and caseload of the Public Safety Detectives. Serves as liaison to external law enforcement agencies and the courts.
Provides support to the Public Safety Management team, BMC control center and parking services and overseas operations as assigned.
Assists with program and policy development, system enhancements and training initiatives as assigned. Utilizes Boston Medical Center core values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the Health Systems mission.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES :
- Oversee the detectives assigned to the Detectives Unit
- The Sergeant Detective works under the direction of the Department of Public Safety Operation's Manager. Performs and oversees initial and follow-up investigations of criminal and non-criminal incidents occurring with-in or around Boston Medical Center properties and health centers, as requested.
- Participates and coordinates Internal Investigations of Public Safety personnel, as directed by the Manager of Public Safety Operations.
Assigns, directs and supervises detectives and / or officers in the investigation of incidents and crimes Conducts follow-up on incident reports submitted by Department of Public Safety personnel or cases referred by other law enforcement agencies.
- Conducts interviews and provides support to patients, visitors, employees, students and staff as needed.
- Ensures follow-up communication and case status is communicated with victims and impacted staff and / or departments.
- Coordinates court appearance and support with victims and witnesses and accompanies medical center personnel and victims to police agencies and to court proceedings.
- Performs police prosecutor functions for the Department of Public Safety, as directed. As such, the Sergeant Detective will :
- Participates in meetings, committees, task forces, etc. as requested.
- Liaison with external government entities (i.e. law enforcement agencies, courts, prosecuting agencies, etc.)
- Liaison with internal entities (general counsel, risk management, insurance carrier, etc.)
- Provide training to Public Safety staff as assigned; present training or instruction to BMC staff as assigned
- Provide and coordinate personal protection to persons as assigned (i.e. VIP visits)
- Manage the evidence and property depositories for the department
- Responsible for any other task as assigned by the command staff
- Conforms to hospital and department standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, customer service and ethical, moral and professional standards of a police officer.
- Utilizes Boston Medical Center's values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the hospital's goals & mission.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Successfully complete a pre-hire medical / physical exam and meet the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Initial-Hire Medical and Physical Ability Test Standards for Police Officers.
- Be a person of good character, integrity and trustworthiness and possess the ability to demonstrate compassion, empathy and respect for all persons.
- Must possess and maintain the right to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Massachusetts.
EDUCATION :
Minimum a Bachelor's Degree preferably in Criminal Justice or related field
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED :
- Must meet and maintain the requirement to possess and maintain a license to carry a firearm in Massachusetts
- Must meet the requirement to be appointed and maintain appointment as a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer pursuant to MGL Chapter 22 section 63
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
- A minimum of 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience in directing and managing others
EXPERIENCE :
Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in conducting criminal investigations / prosecutions in a law enforcement or healthcare setting
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS :
- Must possess superior knowledge and understanding of the Massachusetts Criminal Laws and the Department of Public Safety Policies and Procedures and court proceedings.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Requires the skill and ability to understand, learn and operate various electronic systems operated and controlled by the Department of Public Safety including but not limited to video and audio systems, computers, electronic record management and incident and dispatch software.
- Must have all special skills or requirements included in the job description for a Public Safety Investigator (Detective).
- Willingness to participate in professional associations involving hospital and school security and safety, including the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) and International Association of College Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).
