Responsibilities
The Senior Claims Consultant will effectively manage all assigned professional liability claims of moderate severity or complexity.
The Senior Claims Consultant will resolve claims according to Best Practices and within authority limits. Key functions include handling primary claims, determining exposure, providing coverage analysis, setting appropriate reserves and attending mediations and / or trials as necessary.
The Senior Claims Consultant will also interact and collaborate with claims and underwriting colleagues, as well as with external business associates including agents and insureds.
- Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Analyze liability and damage issues and coverage issues, and draft coverage position letters reflecting same
- Evaluate, investigate, negotiate and resolve claims with moderate supervision by the Chief Claims Officer
- Supervise outside counsel in an effort to effective resolve claims
- Make appropriate decisions within claim authority and make appropriate recommendations to Chief Claims Officer when necessary
- Within authority limit, retain, monitor, manage and approve payments to outside counsel on routine litigation matters, actively utilizing litigation management
- Be accountable for accurate documentation and information in claim files in adherence with claim documentation standards
- Provide superior customer service to internal and external customers
- Provide support and information to underwriters in connection with their evaluation of risk on particular accounts
- Recognize issues with broader implications to Berkley Management Protection
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree, J.D. preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of professional liability claims handling experience or litigation experience, preferably as a coverage attorney
- Ability to obtain and maintain required adjuster licenses within 90 day
- Knowledge of the insurance industry, claims, and the insurance legal and regulatory environment
- Primary Employment Practice Liability experience - claims or litigation
- Analytical skills and sound claim handling skills within authority level
- An agile team player with strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and interpersonal skill
- Demonstrated ability to be organized, prioritize and request help when needed
- Attention to detail
