Electrician I

Come join the City of Virginia Beach Public Works team as an Electrician I ! As an Electrician I, youwill perform a variety of electrical maintenance and construction tasks.

Duties include but are not limited to :

• Will assist in performing troubleshooting, repairs, alterations, and installations to the electrical streetlighting facilities / infrastructure throughout the City of Virginia Beach (CVB) in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations.
• Routinely read / review electrical schematics, control panel schedules and electrical drawings
• Be knowledgeful of and able to read and understand NEC and OSHA standards to ensure a safe working environment and quality workmanship with regards to electrical construction and maintenance
• Inspect active roadway and / or other CVB projects that involve new lighting installations or upgrades to existing facilities.

Complete work orders, document technical data, and daily project / work logs

• Will utilize computers to interface with radios and automated lighting control systems for themed lighting locations.
• Collect light lumen readings during night operations when needed
• Interact with private electrical contractors working on CVB projects
• Work on electrical systems to include, but not limited to, lighting control centers, contactor switches, surge arrestors, thermostats, humidistats, photocells, meters, wiring, lighting fixtures, etc.
• Operation of various vehicles including long boom bucket trucks, utility vehicles, vehicles equipped with TMA devices, etc.
• Maintain personal protective equipment.
• Work in all types of weather conditions and emergency situations. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operation status.
• Required nights, weekends, and holidays on standby rotation schedule associated with the lighting maintenance program as well as the VA811 Miss Utility ticket response program.
• Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs.

This is a safety sensitive position; you must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and pass a mandatory drug test.

This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days / hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and / or in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies
