Position Summary
Jackson State University Small Business Center invites applications for the position of Director, Business Development and Training.
The position will help drive community-based entrepreneurial training. The Director will support activities as needed to help drive the growth of small businesses in Jackson, MS and the surrounding areas.
The Director will provide no-to low-cost training, and resource and referral services to Mississippi’s small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, which fosters a strong climate for small business growth.
Qualifications
Minimum Required Education
An earned graduate degree appropriate to the academic discipline / topic and a record of productivity and professional achievement.
Minimum Required Experience
Full-time professional experience in consulting, management, and working with small businesses, particularly minority-owned / operated small businesses, is desirable with the opportunity to provide assistance and counseling to these small businesses.
Preferred Education and Experience :
Seven or more years (7+) of professional practice in startup strategies and marketing, design thinking and customer validation, business valuation, business pitch / plan development, attracting stakeholders, financing the venture, managing the growing business and exit strategies, and / or relevant expertise in corporate innovation, strategy and competition in high.

- Ability to work under strict deadlines.

- Ability to work independently as well as be part of a productive team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet software, and database applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Database).
Must also become knowledgeable with the SBDC information system.
- Maintain professional standards and University policies.
- Have effective communication skills (writing and speaking) to make individual and group presentations.
- Be a good listener to understand stakeholders’ and clients’ needs, both internally and externally, and proactively respond to those needs in a consistent and timely manner.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external constituents.
- Be an effective planner and able to manage time and multiple concurrent tasks and must be able to react and adapt to changing situations appropriately.
- Be personable, supportive, sensitive and able to exercise solid, independent judgment while representing the ideals and goals of the JSU SBC and Jackson State University.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Director position will perform the following essential functions :
- Provide entrepreneurial and business development training to clients of the JSU Small Business Center.
- Coordinate activities and cooperate with lending institutions and other agencies such as banks, the Small Business Administration, Community Development Corporation, Planning & Development Districts, and etc.
to host trainings at the JSU Small Business Center.
- Plan, develop, and conduct training workshops for the general public as part of the executive education and community outreach activities of the JSU Small Business Center.
- Develop the entrepreneurship and small business management curriculum for the JSU Small Business Center.
- Provide assistance to minority-owned / operated small businesses to manage, grow, and improve their business ventures.
- Serve as a mentor to on-campus and off-campus small businesses and entrepreneurs.
- Attend community forums and events to increase the exposure of the JSU SBC and the services provided to the business and local community.
- Help organize and run a campus-wide entrepreneurship and business plan competitions.
- Help seek funding (federal, state, local, industry, non-profits, foundation) to ensure the sustainability of the JSU Small Business Center.
