Summary :

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

Considered one of the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 325,000 visitors a year.

There are more than 140 public education programs and over 70,000 students served annually. The Museum employs about 160 people.

Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself. The Museum will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history.

The Museum has launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits.

This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

The Museum is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking, creative, organized and energetic professional who is passionate about science education in our region and beyond.

Job Description :

The primary responsibilities of the Security Guard are to ensure the safety and security of the Museum premises, exhibits, staff and visitors.

A Security Guard will be entrusted with protecting valuable artifacts, artwork, and cultural treasures, while maintaining a welcoming and pleasant environment for visitors.

Security Guards play a crucial role in preventing theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access, while providing assistance and information to museum patrons when needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : (Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation)

Security Monitoring

  • Conduct regular patrols throughout the museum premises, including galleries, exhibition halls, storage areas, and public spaces
  • Monitor surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and other security equipment to detect any suspicious activities or breaches
  • Respond promptly to alarms, emergencies, and incidents, taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and the protection of museum assets

Access Control and Visitor Management

  • Check and verify the identification of staff, visitors, contractors, and deliveries, ensuring authorized access to restricted areas.
  • Monitor entrances and exits to prevent unauthorized entry, and enforce museum policies regarding prohibited items, photography, and visitor conduct
  • Provide courteous and helpful assistance to visitors, answering questions, providing directions, and ensuring a positive visitor experience.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures, including fire evacuation, medical emergencies, and natural disasters, and respond accordingly.
  • Interact with local law enforcement, fire department, and emergency services, providing assistance and coordination during emergencies
  • Conduct regular checks of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and other safety equipment, reporting any deficiencies or maintenance needs

Incident Reporting and Documentation

  • Accurately document and report all security incidents, accidents, violations, and unusual activities, maintaining detailed records.
  • Prepare written statements as required for investigations, providing accurate and timely information to museum management
  • Maintain professional appearance, attitude and work habits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Security Management team

Physical Working Conditions : Indoor / Outdoor, all weather conditions Position may require sitting, walking, or standing for extended periods of time

Physical Effort Required : Some physical effort may occasionally be required. Must be able to lift 30 lbs Must be able to respond to emergency situations

Education / Experience :

  • High School Diploma or GED Red Cross CPR & First-Aid Certified preferred
  • Experience and / or training in emergency services, law enforcement or military service preferred

Work Schedule : Monday - Friday; Weekends & Evenings, as needed
