Job Description
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse who is licensed as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and has been prepared with the appropriate graduate level education and authorized to practice and prescribe as such.
The CNM may provide a full range of primary care health women’s health services, including but not limited to pregnancy care, menopause care, annual gynecological care, and as directed by their state designated scope of practice.
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will provide support and guidance throughout the birthing process from prenatal care to post-partum care by monitoring the physical, emotional, and mental state of the mom throughout entire process and are integral at ensuring the safety of the baby.
If practicing in a hospital setting, the delineation of privileges will also define their scope.
Job Responsibility
ED RESPONSIBILITIES
CNM may be responsible for evaluating gynecology consults in the ED in conjunction with a collaborating physician.
DELIVERY
The CNM provides support for a pregnant woman and her partner as labor gets under way and until the baby is born. In a hospital setting, midwives can consult with or turn the patient over to an OB-GYN if complications arise.
They provide the physical, mental, and emotional support that the mother needs and work to keep the technical intervention to a minimum.
- CNM will be responsible for interpreting fetal heart rate tracings, performing rupture of membranes and placement of internal monitors if necessary.
- CNM may also assist during caesarian sections or be involved in vaginal deliveries.
- CNM will assist with postpartum care and education as well as discharge planning.
OB TRIAGE
Evaluate and treat pregnant patients who present in OB triage, this includes but is not limited to monitoring for labor, reading and interpreting NST’s, diagnosing and managing common pregnancy conditions.
Job Qualifications
EDUCATION : Advanced Practice Registered Nurse : Certified Nurse Midwife must have a Master’s or Doctorate degree from a Nurse Midwifery accredited program.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE : 2 3 years of Certified Nurse Midwife experience preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE :

- The APP demonstrates evidence of continuing professional growth.
- The APP demonstrates the ability to accept and implement change and the ability to work in a culturally diverse setting.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS :
- Certified Nurse Midwife certification as verified by the American Midwifery Certification Board or other accredited certification body.
- Current valid license (registration) by the Ohio Board of Nursing or applicable state.
- BLS certified.
- ACLS and PALS as dictated by the Delineation of privileges.
- Standard Care Arrangement with collaborating physician for Ohio or applicable state
- Membership in professional organization is desirable.
