Chief Operating Officer / Chief Financial Officer

The COO / CFO will report to the Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director and will serve as one of two senior members (in tandem with the Senior Deputy Director and Chief Curator) on the Leadership Team.

This role has supervisory responsibly for the Museum's Finance, IT, Human Resources, and Building Operations and Security functions.

Responsibilities : Financial Oversight

Financial Oversight

  • Oversee short- and long-term strategic financial planning, ensuring the long-term stability of the institution and alignment with the Director's vision.
  • Supervise all audit and accounting functions, including oversight of the external audit and preparation of the Museum's Form 990.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and the highest ethical standards.
  • Lead the annual operating budget process.
  • Serve as the key staff liaison to the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees of the Board.
  • Oversee organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Oversee the Museum's treasury operation.
  • Develop effective reporting and analytic tools to keep the staff and Board apprised of the Museum's financial status.
  • Provide tactical recommendations that further the Museum's mission and strategic direction.
  • Stay abreast of new regulations and trends, ensuring best practices in non-profit philanthropic financial management.

Administrative Oversight

  • As part of the Senior Leadership Team, drive strategic and tactical planning efforts that strengthen the Museum's infrastructure and sustainability.
  • Help prepare for and execute major capital projects, renovations, and building repairs.
  • With the Senior Director of Operations and Director of Security, ensure the functional integrity and security of the Museum, including oversight of its security systems, building maintenance, and mechanical plans.
  • With the Chief Information Officer, optimize technology across the Museum to increase organizational efficiency, improve information accessibility, and ensure data security.
  • With the Director, Human Resources, oversee human resources management, including recruiting and retention, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations, and training and development.
  • Report to the Board of Trustees, government agencies, and other external stakeholders on areas of operational significance.

Leadership and Relationship Management

  • Lead, mentor, empower, delegate to, and evaluate the performance of a diverse team of professional and technical staff, listening to their ideas, understanding their strengths, and encouraging each individual's professional growth.
  • Promote a culture of respect that rewards collaboration, learning, accountability, and initiative.

Requirements :

  • A commitment to, and intellectual curiosity about, the mission of the Jewish Museum-to illuminate the complexity and vibrancy of Jewish culture for a global audience.
  • Sophisticated financial acumen, at both a comprehensive and granular level, with a proven ability to deliver measurable outcomes.
  • An ability to build and refine systems and processes that enable efficient budgeting, financial controls and quality, and timely reporting.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills as well as knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for non-profits and philanthropic financial management.
  • Knowledge of non-profit governance including experience interfacing with governing boards and a deep understanding of mission-driven organizations.
  • A track record of strong leadership and collaborative management skills that have influenced business culture.
  • The initiative needed to take on new projects and to strive for continual improvement.
  • Unquestioned integrity, ethics, and values.
  • Creativity and the ability to think conceptually and analytically.
  • A sense of humor and a sense of joy in one's work, as well as a calm yet authoritative demeanor.

A bachelor's degree is required for this position as is at least ten years of financial and administrative management experience with at least five of those years being at a senior managerial level.

The estimated salary for this role is in the $225,000 - $325,000 range.
