Job Summary :

Functions as a Lead of the healthcare team to help ensure the delivery of quality patient care in a safe, healing environment that is patient and family centered.

Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Has an appropriate clinical skill to be an expert resource.

Is available and supportive to employees and understands priorities / needs of the department. Is a staff role model for professional nursing practice.

May recommend to management efficient resource allocation by assuring appropriate patient assignments and staffing. Demonstrates performance consistent with the strategic plan of the organization and the HPMC nursing mission and values.

Representative Duties :

The Charge Registered Nurse demonstrates proficiency by exhibiting the following skills, competencies, and behaviors :

Leadership :

  • Makes appropriate staff assignments based upon patient acuity, staff competencies, and abilities.
  • Understands needs and sets priorities for their shift.
  • Provides professional leadership and direction of department personnel in order to maintain efficient delivery of effective patient care.
  • Makes appropriate and consistent evaluation of priorities throughout the shift and makes adjustments as necessary to maintain satisfactory operations.
  • Is an excellent staff role model for professional nursing practice (e.g. RN / MD Collaborating for Outcomes, Speak up Culture, Quality, Service, and Safety).
  • Supports and enhances the leadership skills of the staff RNs, MT’s and CNAs (and other ancillary staff as appropriate).
  • Interprets hospital policies to employees, patients, families and physicians.
  • Champions new ideas; actively collaborates with others through the change process Acts as a resource and mentor to new employees / transfers, registry, travelers, students, and other team members in department specific operations and patient care activities.
  • Collaborates with or refers to manager / clinical coordinator / educator any outstanding issues or concerns on the unit.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify, resolve, and prioritize problems during their shift.
  • Supports compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Participates in activities related to patient flow, including admission and discharge processes.
  • Facilitates inter-professional / interdisciplinary communication and collaboration.

Nursing Process :

  • Serves as a resource for clinical concerns.
  • Possesses experience and skills to be a resource for providers, RNs, MT’s, USs / CNAs, (and other ancillary staff as appropriate).
  • Actively involved in assigning, coaching, and educating staff as needed.

Documentation :

Participates in audits and ensures that documentation reflects thorough assessments, incorporates physical and psychosocial findings, diagnostic tests, learning needs, barriers, multidisciplinary education plans and age appropriate care.

  • Adjusts staffing needs of the department to assure quality patient care, including determining if additional staff is needed
  • Actively models Work Place Safety principles and practices.

Patient Care Experience / Customer Service :

  • Acts as a role model for staff regarding providing a patient care experience that exceeds patients’ expectations.
  • Ensures timely and appropriate management of patients.
  • Supports the smooth transition for patients across the care continuum.
  • Participates in daily leadership rounds, documents rounding activities on unit rounding logs (as appropriate.). (in home unit)
  • Assures hourly rounds are conducted by staff. Where appropriate, assures hourly rounds are documented according to unit / facility policy or guidelines.

Team Commitment :

  • Ensures a supportive collaborative environment through communication.
  • Lead / facilitate daily / shift multidisciplinary huddles.
  • Confronts difficult or conflict situations constructively and seeks appropriate assistance.

Fiscal Responsibility :

  • Provides recommendations to management for resource allocation (assignments, scheduling, staffing, equipment / supplies management).
  • Collaborates and assists with leadership, physicians, and peers in staffing, workflow and throughput to promote quality patient care, patient and staff safety, efficiency, productivity and working conditions of providers and staff.

Professional Development :

  • Attends Charge Nurse Educational programs.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth and development.

Minimum Education :

Graduate of a Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approved nursing program or equivalent curriculum that meets the requirements of a BRN approved nursing program.

Preferred Education :

BSN preferred.

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications :

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work in a union environment.

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications :

Two years of RN experience in an acute care environment, one of which included charge and or preceptor responsibility.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation :

  • Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) card.
  • Specialty certification from a nationally recognized organization relevant to area of practice required or obtained within 1 year of hire or promotion to Charge Nurse.
  • Other training to be eligible as a Level III RN must be met at time of hire or within 1 year of hire.
  • Other certifications : must possess the same required certifications as the RNs in the department of hire.
  • Los Angeles County Fire Card (or obtain within 30 days of hire).

Estimated hourly pay for this position is $55.50 - $86.05 per hour. Additional individual compensation may be available for this role through differentials, extra shift incentives, referral bonus, other bonuses, etc.

Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package, and a comprehensive benefits program is available for qualifying positions.
