The Oregonian / OregonLive in Portland is looking for a temporary general assignment features reporter who can write lively and informative stories on a variety of topics.

Our talented and collaborative Life & Culture team is looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm who understands what makes for a compelling story, is willing to raise their hand for assignments, and who has a special interest or experience in food, arts and culture and pop culture writing.

An ability to balance quick turnaround stories with more thorough and in-depth content that explores Oregon’s diversity is imperative.

This is a six-month position with a flexible start date.

What you'll get the opportunity to do :

• Report and write a wide range of stories about lifestyles, arts and culture, pop culture and food
• Jump in to help with breaking news and fast-developing stories
• Take photos and video that can be used in stories and on social media
• Collaborate closely with our social media and visuals team to leverage social media to build interest in your stories
• Be flexible to work nights and weekends

The ideal candidate will have :

• Internship experience at a major publication and / or a college degree in Journalism or similar field
• Minimum of 2 years of journalism experience with a proven ability for clear, engaging writing, fresh story framing and diverse sourcing
• Solid news judgment and journalistic ethics
• Headline writing skills
• Experience responding in breaking news situations
• Ability to collaborate on projects
• Ability to work independently and remotely
• Understanding of metrics and how to leverage platforms to reach maximum engagement
• This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events
