Providing a full range of functions in the support of the Columbia site facilities fire protection programs and systems to ensure compliance and continuous improvement of the fire protection equipment and processes.
Interface with operations management, outside agencies and regulatory personnel (OSHA / NRC). Provide support and guidance for systems and equipment modifications and upgrades, and ensure overall fire protection program compliance with all required regulations (NFPA).
Your day to day :
Maintain and improve facility firesafety procedures to ensure they are usable by plant employees, reflect industry best practices, meet regulatory requirements while promoting a Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) and a strong Nuclear Safety Culture.
Training associated with the facility fire safety procedures will also be required.
Fire Safety procedures may include :
- Fire Watch Safety
- Hot Work Safety
- Fire Alarm, Criticality Impairment & Fire Pump Use Reporting Procedure
- Portable Fire Extinguisher Inspection & Maintenance
- Fire System Impairment Reports / Forms
- Design and Installation of Fire Alarm Systems
- Procedure ownership requires continual oversight to maintain concurrence with regulations and other industry standards.
- Training for some of the procedures will be required either through in person delivered training or through development of web based training
Manage the various Fire Safety Significant Controls and ensure the appropriate usage and integration with other safety disciplines, nuclear criticality safety, environmental protection, emergency preparedness, etc
- Fire Safety Significant controls have been created for many processes within the facility (boilers, furnaces, hot water / steam processes, Incinerator, Hot Oil system, and Engine Rooms).
- These are maintained through Fire Safety PM reviews, Control Configuration changes, drawings, and operational / maintenance procedures.
Participate in Process Hazards Analyses when they have a fire safety component.
Participation in these will ensure appropriate implementation of fire safety suppression or detection systems.
Manage the Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) Document.
This is a living document for the plant and will require continual attention to ensure recommendations are implemented and continually reviewed to ensure compliance with the applicable NFPA standards.
Participate actively in internal audits of the Fire Safety programs as well as external audits conducted by the NRC / ANI (American Nuclear Insurers) / property insurance carriers and our corporate EHS entity
- Plan for and participate in internal quality audits of the Fire Safety procedures / programs, NRC / ANI audits, or WEC EHS audits.
- This requires planning appropriately for areas to be audited as well as handling corrective actions stemming from the audit.
Provide technical support to future site projects. (LEU+, ADOPT etc)

What you need to be successful in this role :
REQUIRED :
- Bachelor’s Degree in any engineering discipline or life or physical sciences, or other EHS related subject matter.
- 8-10 years fire safety experience is required. Nuclear experience is required
- Demonstrate knowledge in Fire Safety Management Systems, Risk Management processes, Audit / Assessment Processes, Training processes, and Fire prevention.
- Demonstrate knowledge and have work experience in Fire Safety Suppression and Detection systems.
- Communication and writing skills are required as well as the ability to influence and effectively partner with others is required.
PREFERRED :
- Bachelor’s Degree in life or physical sciences, engineering, or other Fire Safety related subject matter.
- 8 years is preferred and at least 2 years with nuclear experience.
- Minimum requirements plus knowledge in Fire Safety Rated Barriers, Fire Safety Interlocks and Project management skills
- NFPA-CFPS-Certified Fire Protection Specialist
- NFPA-CFPE-Certified Fire Plan Examiner
- NFPA-CFI-Certified Fire Inspector I
- OSHA 30 Hour
