A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and / or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

The medical assistant assists in the delivery of health care for patients per their scope of practice, in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger.

This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State guidelines and are trained and assigned to manage the practices patient population.

Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.

Phlebotomy Skills

Position Requirement(s) : License / Certification / Registration

BLS completed prior to going to the unit / department and to be maintained going forward.

Clinical Medical Assistant Certification

For Medical Assistants who work in areas with DNV Advanced Specific Disease Certification requirements :

  • Ortho : 4 hours education annually
  • Stroke : 1 hour education annually
  • Spine : 2 hours education annually

Department Position Summary :

The employee must be able to :

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in physician practice.

Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.

Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.

Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.

Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include :

oChecking schedules and organizing patient flow

oAccompanying patients to exam / procedure room

oAssisting patients as needed with walking transfers,

dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting

patient history

oPerforming screenings per provider guideline

oAssisting providers / nurses with various procedures, charting,

relaying instructions to patients / families, answering calls and

providing pertinent information.

Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include :

oSending / receiving patient medical records

oObtaining lab / x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information,

etc.

oCompleting forms / requisitions as needed

oScheduling appointments

oVerifying insurance coverage and patient demographics

oManaging and updating charts to ensure that information is

complete and filed appropriately.

oReviewing in basket messages

Fulfill environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include :

oSetting up instruments and equipment according to department

protocols

oCleaning exam / procedure rooms, instruments, equipment between

patient visits to maintain infection control.

oRunning quality controls on equipment as required and

documenting / record keeping.

oMaintaining logs : Refrigerator

Fulfill organizational responsibilities as assigned including :

oRespecting / promoting patient rights

oResponding appropriately to emergency codes

oSharing problems relating to patient and / or staff with immediate

supervisor

Fulfill medical assisting responsibilities according to State

guidelines / regulations which may include :

oAseptic technique

oSterilization

oInstrument wrapping / autoclaving

oVital signs

oPreparation for physical exam

oClinical pharmacology

oDrug administration

Injection

oPrescription verification with physician order

oMinor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up

oPre / post surgical care

oApplying dressings / suture removal

oBiohazard waste disposal / monitoring

oTherapeutic modalities

oInstructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, home

care

oLaboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health

Administration guidelines

oQuality control methods

oCLIA waived testing

oCapillary punctures / venipunctures

oSpecimen handling- urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum

oElectrocardiography
