Job Purpose and Summary
This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. An employee in this classification has responsibility for the performance of skilled tasks in servicing and repairing automobiles, trucks, rollers, sweepers and other construction and maintenance equipment.
Employees work under general supervision, using judgement concerning the method of repair after receiving oral or written orders identifying a problem or need to repair a piece of equipment.
A supervisor may test results during the work and / or after work has been completed.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Repairs and overhauls automobiles, trucks, tractors, air compressors, cement mixers and other equipment.
Operates various types of motor vehicles. Applies a working knowledge of equipment systems, functions and components.
Repairs engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes and all parts of automotive equipment.
Checks and balances wheels for proper alignment.
Analyzes, troubleshoots and tests alternators, generators and electrical system components on equipment. Performs repairs as required.
Troubleshoots, repairs or rebuilds hydraulic systems.
Keeps and reports on service and repair records.
Inspects all PTC vehicles for compliance with state regulations.
Completes diagnostic work on gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engine systems.
Performs emergency road-side service.
Performs minor welding as required.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Completion of high school or equivalent certification.
Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL)
Possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Class A learner’s permit. Must pass the Class A CDL road test by the end of their trial period (current employees) or probationary period (new hires).
The incumbent must possess an N or X endorsement on their CDL or permit to authorize them to operate tank vehicles.
The incumbent may not have any of the following restrictions on their CDL or permit :
E Prohibits the operation of manual transmission commercial vehicles
L or Z Prohibits driving a commercial vehicle equipped with airbrakes
O Prohibits the driver from driving a truck tractor / semi-trailer combination
Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).
Must possess a valid Class 4 or Class 7 Pennsylvania state inspection license.
- A degree or certification in automotive technology from an accredited technical school;
- Three (3) years of experience as an automotive or truck mechanic with a major automotive repair facility, with a minimum of 3 certifications in automotive or truck repair from the Institute of Automotive Services Excellence;
Four (4) years of experience as an automotive mechanic with experience in gasoline, diesel or alternative fuel engine diagnostics, electronics and hydraulic troubleshooting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position requires frequent speaking. Position requires occasional work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems, including writing and / or reading reports.
Occasionally works long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or for extended work assignments. Lifts, carries or exerts force equivalent to lifting up to 75 pounds.
Position requires frequent travel and / or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Position requires the ability to work on equipment above the head, bending, crouching, lying and frequently several feet above the ground.
Exposure to adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
