The philosophy of Drake University is that student life in the residence halls is not separate from the academic mission of the University, but rather it is supportive of students’ total development.

The Assistant Director (AD), Upper Class Experience will work actively and collaboratively toward the realization of this philosophy serving as a role model, advisor, administrator, supervisor, and supporter.

The AD is a twelve month, live-in, master’s degree-level preferred or willingness to start a program of study (master’s degree in College Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred) professional who reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life.

The AD facilitates the total student life experience in three residence halls (one upper-class, one mixed class hall on campus, and an off-campus residence hall) with approximately 900 residents.

These responsibilities include programming, enforcement of community standards, supervision of undergraduate and full-time staff, and management of desk operations.

The AD also plays a role in the campus-wide elements of the First Year Experience, including Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, and Admission’s events.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Master’s Degree preferred or willingness to start a program of study (master’s degree in College Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred)
  • 1-3 Years of related experience
  • Demonstrable competencies in using computers, spreadsheet / database applications (i.e. Microsoft Excel, Google Doc), word processing applications (i.

e., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications :

Prior experiencing using Star Rez, Maxient, Starfish, Canva, and Instagram

Job Duties :

35% - Supports and encourages programming by fostering a positive, inclusive community of 500-900 students in the residence halls.

Manages administrative needs of hall including facility concerns, occupancy, conduct audits, room assignments / consolidation, and maintains fiscal and ethical responsibility.

Responsible for the initial contact with residents who violate residence hall and / or university policies through educational remedies, interventions, mediation, and restorative justice.

18 Resident Assistants (RAs) and 2-3 Assistant Residence Hall Coordinators (ARHC) and 60+ Student Desk Receptionists. Plans and coordinates training and selection of student and professional staff and staff assessment modules. - (Essential)

25% - Advises hall government and Residence Hall Association, Residence Hall Association Programming Board and / or National Residence Hall Honorary.

Serves as a liaison between Residence Life and the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Assists the Director of Equity and Inclusion with response to campus and student as needed or directed.

Work collaboratively with the Office of Equity and Inclusion in the planning and facilitation of residence life DEI programs and development sessions.

Maintain fiscal and ethical responsibility for area budget. - (Essential)

15% - Manages administrative needs of area including facility concerns, occupancy, conduct audits, and room assignments / consolidation.

Responsible for 16-hour desk operations, which include the selection, training, organization, scheduling, and supervision of the desk staff.

Collaborates to support the coordination / implementation of the Residence Life components of Interim, J-Term, Spring Break Housing, Summer School, Orientation, Camp and Conference Housing operations.

Coordinates and assesses faculty / staff program initiatives for Residence Life. Participates in continual improvement planning and assessments. - (Essential)

15% - Responsible for the initial and secondary contact with residents who violate residence hall and / or university policies through educational sanctioning and intervention.

Attend and contribute to the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) meeting weekly, as needed or directed. - (Essential)

5% - Participates in an on-call duty rotation and responds to conduct concerns or emergency situations in residence halls.

Advises and counsels students on personal and academic matters, making referrals as necessary. - (Essential)

Salary, Room & Board, & Benefits :

The salary for this position is competitive with peer schools and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

As a live-in position, Drake will also provide a partially furnished one-bedroom apartment (with washer and dryer access), reserved parking, and meal plan (when school is in session).
