The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenured professor and department head for the Department of Nuclear Engineering with an 11-month academic appointment beginning as early as January 2025.

The candidate must have notable accomplishments and experience in research, academic or industry leadership, teaching, and scholarship.

The candidate must be an innovative and visionary leader, with strong communication skills and a clear vision to serve as department head for a top engineering program in the country.

We seek candidates who will recruit, retain, and lead outstanding faculty members to enhance the research and educational achievements of the department.

Specific duties and responsibilities include : 1) providing leadership of the faculty, staff, and students to define and achieve departmental goals 2) managing the department's staff, faculty, and finances 3) serving as liaison for the department to the College of Engineering and the Texas A&M University System 4) representing the department to state and federal agencies, private organizations, partners and collaborators, key industry groups, and the Nuclear Engineering Department Heads Organization 5) promoting the research and educational opportunities associated with the department to other nuclear engineering departments and other universities 6) providing leadership for continuing acquisition of internal and external resources for the department.

Established in 1958, the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University serves the state, nation, and global community by nurturing nuclear engineering professionals who meet the complex challenges associated with the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and enhancement of global security.

We are the largest program in the United States, with a current enrollment of approximately 300 undergraduate and over 130 graduate students.

Our undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked second among U.S. public schools (U.S. News and World Report). The 16 tenured and tenure-track and over 10 academic-track faculty members in the department are internationally recognized for their outstanding contributions in research, education, and service.

Three of our faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering and six are American Nuclear Society fellows. Many faculty members are engaged in interdisciplinary research, with expertise spanning the range from basic to applied, with especially notable strengths in power engineering, nuclear security and nonproliferation, materials, health physics, and computational science and engineering;

these areas are also the graduate research tracks. Our world-class research facilities include two research reactors, seven accelerators, radiation detection laboratories, thermal hydraulics and fluid flow laboratories, and plant simulator laboratories.

These facilities are the foundation of our research and academic programs providing our students with unique hands-on experiences in all areas of nuclear engineering.

The faculty, staff, and students within the department strive for a synergistic and collegial environment. The department offers B.

S., M.S., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering and an undergraduate minor in radiological health engineering. The vast majority of the more than 130 graduate students are funded via research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships.

The undergraduate program has held accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) since 1969.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in nuclear engineering or a closely related engineering or science discipline. Candidates must possess proven leadership and administrative skills and an established national reputation as a leader and a scholar consistent with an appointment to the rank of professor of nuclear engineering with tenure.

Candidates must possess a proven record of successful management and leadership of externally funded projects, and they are expected to have excellent interpersonal skills.

To assure a candidate's ability to understand and effectively perform the duties expected of the department head, candidates are expected to have an established track record of leadership in academic organizations or in organizations with close ties to academic institutions .
