Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050.
We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing.
Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV / AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs , and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position : Substance Abuse Counselor
The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct counseling, guidance, and case management services to clients with specific substance abuse problems.
The counselor participates in delivery of services to all clients as needed.
Commonwealth Veterans Residence is a single room occupancy (SRO) residence that provides permanent, supportive housing to formerly homeless single veteran men and women, including those diagnosed with behavioral health issues.

Minimum Qualifications :
The position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and certification as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC).
Substance Abuse Counselor Principal Responsibilities :
- Provide appropriate counseling services to individuals with specialized needs as defined in the service plan, including intake and assessment where required.
- Develop service plans with clients that address individualized needs.
- Maintain client records.
- Maintain linkages with community treatment providers.
- Complete accurate and comprehensive service delivery reports.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
- Serve as a resource to staff on substance abuse issues.
