Position Description

The instructional designer will design and develop instructional materials for criminal justice programs, using hybrid, in-person, virtual, and eLearning modalities, to help learners acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies in an effective and appealing manner.

This position will also assist with the planning, coordination, facilitation, and implementation of curriculum committee meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Apply ADDIE and other instructional design models as well as tested learning and motivational theories
  • Coordinate and collaborate with various departments and subject-matter experts (SMEs) to design, develop, and revise courses and associated materials
  • Facilitate curriculum development and other meetings
  • Train SMEs and other stakeholders on course design processes and products
  • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts
  • Develop measurable instructional goals and performance objectives and ensure that content matches those goals and objectives
  • Develop or revise content to match learning needs
  • Maintain project documentation and development of course materials
  • Research and identify data sources for instructional material development and additional information needed for product development
  • Design, develop, and organize content, activities, and physical / electronic files to ensure accuracy and consistency during the maintenance process
  • Design and develop course materials that support learning for a variety of delivery methods
  • Adapt existing instructional materials to other modalities
  • Develop or revise course content according to accessibility and accreditation standards
  • Document and cite sources and media used in course development and, when necessary, obtain permission for media use from the originator
  • Develop criteria and instruments to assess learners' performance
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a course and course materials
  • Maintain currency on the latest in emerging instructional design techniques and technologies, to include blended and online learning environments
  • Collaborate and share best practices in instructional design and product development
  • Other duties, as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional systems, instructional design, educational technology, or a related field
  • Master's degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field or near completion of master's degree, with equivalent training and experience preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of directly related experience, including, but not limited to, designing and storyboarding classroom, online learning, and / or e-learning products
  • Knowledge of the criminal and juvenile justice systems, law enforcement background, and / or experience in law enforcement instructional design preferred
  • Strong understanding of sound instructional design principles (ADDIE, SAM, Kirkpatrick, Keller) and the proper utilization of technology to enhance training delivery
  • Strong interpersonal skills and business acumen to interact with many different departments and decision-makers within and outside of the organization
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and various Internet browsers
  • Familiarity with design and development software tools such as Web 2.0 tools, Adobe Creative Cloud, SnagIt, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, Articulate 360

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Most work is performed in a highly productive and fast-paced virtual office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Employees must be able to maintain a quiet remote office space that is free of distractions. Some assignments may require travel, which may include trips to other countries requiring a passport .
