Job Summary

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring a faculty member to join our dedicated, passionate faculty team beginning Fall 2024.

This position will be responsible for teaching college level biology courses for both majors and non-majors. In addition to teaching, assessment, and professional growth activities, faculty are also required to participate in departmental, college, and district-wide activities, such as serving on committees and work teams, directing student clubs, research, and special projects.

Biology faculty instructs biology courses for majors, non-majors and / or allied health-related programs.

Additional Information

Biologists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply with special attention to the following areas (Animal Science, Animal Behavior, Zoology, Botany, Marine Biology, Organismal Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Botany, Evolutionary Biology or other organismal biological sciences)

Essential Functions

  • Teaches a minimum of 30 load-hours per academic year and maintains a minimum of 5 office hours per week to assist and mentor students.
  • Teaches a diverse population of students by incorporating multiple methods of instruction and assessment in a classroom and lab setting.
  • Develops written syllabi and course / lab materials, evaluates student knowledge of subject matter taught and maintains course grades, prepares and grades exams and other assignments.
  • Utilizes Canvas or appropriate learning management system for course administration.
  • Participates in divisional, college, district activities.
  • Collaborates with faculty, lab staff, tutors, and other student support services.
  • Participates in professional development to stay current with new trends and developments in the field of Biology and teaching and learning.
  • Participates in developing and / or revising curriculum within the division and district

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree or higher in biology or a biology-related discipline

A Master’s degree or higher in a medical or health-related discipline ( MD, PA, DVM, DPM, DO, DC, DDS, ND)

A Master’s degree in any teaching field with Education, with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in a Biological or Life Science Area (see list of acceptable disciplines below)

Acceptable disciplines and coursework include but are not limited to :

Agricultural Sciences, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Biology / Science Education (maximum of six (6) graduate credits can be applied to the eighteen (18) required), Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Botany, Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Conservation-Wildlife / Plant / Animal, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Evolutionary Biology, Embryology, Entomology, Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Immunology, Limnology, Mammalogy, Marine Sciences, Marine Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology - Soil / Medical / Veterinary, Molecular Biology, Mycology, Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Nutritional Sciences, Ornithology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Therapy, Physiology, Plant And Animal Sciences, Public Health - Epidemiology / Infectious Disease / Toxicology, Veterinary Sciences, Virology, Zoology.

Desired Qualifications

A. Masters or Doctoral degree in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Botany, Evolutionary Biology or other organismal biological sciences.

B. Two (2) or more years experience of full-time or equivalent teaching experience in high school or college, including face-to-face and / or alternative modalities such as hybrid or online.

C. Two (2) or more years of laboratory experience or field research experience in biological sciences.

D. Three examples of demonstrated effectiveness using best practices in community college education to develop biology lecture and lab curriculum.

E. Demonstrated experience supporting the needs of marginalized or under-represented students from diverse backgrounds.

F. Three examples of demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students, faculty and / or staff to support academic and institutional success.

G. Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning as evidenced by professional growth and / or service.

Special Working Conditions

Exposure to biology laboratory chemicals, specimens (including preserved specimens, BSL 2

microbes).
