The Role : Controller
Location : Austin, TX (Hybrid Schedule 1 or 2 days in office)

The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Controller to lead and actively participate in the financial operations of the multifamily housing portfolio. Unlike a purely oversight role, this position requires a hands-on leader who is ready to directly engage in accounting processes, investor reporting, and audit preparation.
The Controller will supervise a team of 10 Financial Administrators while also personally managing property-level books to fully understand workflows, constraints, and opportunities for improvement. This role is critical in ensuring timely, accurate reporting to investors, equity partners, and lenders, while fostering a collaborative relationship between finance and operations.
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all property-level and consolidated accounting, budgeting, and cash management.
- Personally manage at least one property’s books to maintain a grounded perspective in day-to-day operations.
- Ensure GAAP compliance, timely month-end and year-end closes, and proper reconciliations across all entities.
- Supervise and mentor 10 Financial Administrators, promoting efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
- Lead and support audits (all properties are audited annually) with firms such as Novogradac and CohnReznick.
Investor & Lender Relations
Prepare and deliver timely financial reports to banks, investors, equity partners, and Housing Authorities.Ensure compliance with reporting requirements under management agreements and funding structures.Engage directly with lenders and investors as needed to maintain confidence and transparency.Compliance & Audit
Maintain audit-ready records across the multifamily portfolio.Ensure compliance with LIHTC, HUD, tax credit programs, and other affordable housing requirements.Partner with Risk Management on insurance and liability policies.Leadership & Execution
Lead by example as both a strategic advisor and active contributor.Identify opportunities to streamline reporting processes and enhance financial controls.Oversee the effective use of financial systems (Yardi, Resman) to improve accuracy and efficiency.Strategic & Development Support
Review financial structures, partnership agreements, and loan closings as needed.Support acquisitions and development projects, including financial due diligence and funding requisitions.Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA strongly preferred).Experience :7–10 years of progressive financial leadership.Multifamily property management experienceAffordable housing / tax credit exposure (highly preferred).Strong knowledge of GAAP, audits, compliance, and financial reporting.Proficiency with property management and accounting systems (Yardi, Resman).Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.Culture & Fit
