Writer / Editor position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). Location : Flexible / remote; preference for Washington, DC area. Salary : Estimated at $60,500; Based on experience. Application Deadline : October 14, 2025.
Position Summary : This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy. ABC is a fast-growing nonprofit seeking employees with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. ABC aims to achieve lasting results for birds while benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet\u2019s climate. The writer / editor will craft and refine engaging content about wild birds and ABC\u2019s work to conserve them and their habitats across the Americas. The role includes researching, writing, and maintaining the Bird Library on ABC\u2019s website and other digital content, and supporting other content needs such as web stories. The position supports expanding ABC\u2019s reach and awareness and motivating actions that benefit birds and ABC\u2019s mission, including fundraising, list growth, and advocacy. The ideal candidate writes accurate, persuasive prose and innovates in the evolving digital content space.
Well-qualified candidates will thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy collaborating with staff and external contacts, have experience with and interest in conservation, and possess a background in environmental topics and a passion for nature, conservation, and birds. The position reports to the Senior Writer / Editor within the ABC Communications & Marketing team.
Primary Duties
- Research and write dynamic and scientifically accurate content for ABCs Bird Library accounts. Work closely with ABC staff to gather and verify information.
- Support the production of other Bird Library content and proofread related graphics, maps, emails, and other items as needed.
- Act as project manager for ABC's Bird Library, including asset and document maintenance. Support Bird Library content and governance strategy through an editorial calendar that includes regular reviews and fact-checking.
- Report and write additional content as assigned.
- Support ABC's Communications & Marketing team with writing, editing, fact-checking, and proofreading content used in a digital ecosystem, including web, email, social media, digital advertising, and more.
- Contribute to the generation of unrestricted revenue by helping advance an effective omnichannel marketing and fundraising strategy.
- Work closely with ABC staff and partners to stay informed about ABC's work and impact.
- Contribute to the development of and adherence to ABCs brand standards, organization-wide content strategy, and style guides.
- Collaborate with other writers on staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including the ability to transform technical information into engaging content for a lay audience (e.g., website content).Strong project management skills and ability to work as part of a team. Familiarity with project management systems is a plus.BA / BS or MA / MS in Journalism, English, or related field, ideally with ornithology / environmental coursework or background.At least 1-2 years of experience in content development (editing / writing / proofreading), preferably for an environmental, science, or policy organization.Knowledge of birds and bird biology resources (e.g., Birds of the World, IUCN Red List, field guides) required.Familiarity with AP style strongly desired.Experience in an omnichannel communications and marketing environment is a plus.Experience with Microsoft Word, WordPress, Google Docs, Trello, Slack, and other communications-related software.All remote and hybrid employees must have a stable, high-speed internet connection prior to starting work (ideal speeds : 30-40 Mbps download, 10-15 Mbps upload).Authorization to work in the US or as a permanent resident.Background screening required.#J-18808-Ljbffr
