A Brief Overview
The Anesthesia Technician assists the anesthesia team prior to, during and following patient procedures in various operating rooms. Needs to be proficient in the sterilization, maintenance, packing and resupplying of the most complex anesthesia supplies and equipment in the operating room, and when available, responds to codes with anesthesia. Responsible for checks and supplies anesthesia carts and machines, checks and replaces anesthesia gas tanks, dissembles used anesthesia equipment, disinfects machines and supply carts, replaces used transducers for invasive hemodynamic monitoring. Maintains responsibility for anesthesia equipment and supplies and assists the anesthesiologist as needed.
What you will do
- Secures all special monitoring equipment, IV tubing, solutions, blood warmers etc. as requested by the Anesthesiologist.
- Ensures availability of difficult intubation equipment / fiberoptic intubations.
- Demonstrates proper infection control techniques during cleaning of anesthesia machines.
- Cleans and damp dusts outside of anesthesia machine with approved disinfectant at the start and conclusion of day and after every case.
- Checks monthly outdated anesthesia supplies and equipment and replaces as needed.
- Reviews inventory of under utilized stock with Chief of Anesthesia on an as needed basis
- Restocks supplies on each anesthesia machine as needed daily. (i.e. endotracheal tubes, oral airways, alcohol pads, suction catheters disposable breathing circuits, masks, nasal cannula, etc.)
- Checks and maintains inventory levels of anesthesia supplies in the O.R. LDRP, IR, ENDO, and MRI
- Checks adult and pediatric code carts in the O.R. LDRP, IR, ENDO, and MRI daily (on weekends Charge RN checks cart)
- Notifies O.R. Manager of need to order outside supplies as required.
- Initiates phone calls to Bio-Med Department for improper functioning of anesthesia machine or equipment.
- Familiar with how to set up and operate and restock the difficult Intubation cart.
- Demonstrates organization skills and the ability to function independently and anticipate the needs of the Anesthesiologist.
- Accomplishes task on a priority basis by reviewing cases for the following day
- Maintains and respects confidentiality.
- Demonstrates compliance with the Hospital and Departments dress code policy by appearing well groomed, wearing ID badge while on duty and maintaining a professional appearance.
- Observes Hospital policy concerning Fire and Safety regulations, Infection Control Standards, smoking restrictions, telephone usage and other rules governing conduct while at work.
- Demonstrates a commitment to own work schedule by adhering to attendance standards.
- Reports to work on time at the start of the shift and after breaks, lunches or dinner periods.
- Provides proper notification in advance for absence of tardiness.
- Maintains and stocks pediatric carts as needed
- Can rotate as OR assistant during staffing needs
- Ensures each OR in every department ready for first case of the day
- Prepares anesthesia supplies :
- Ensure anesthesia carts are supplied and machines are in each room prior to the beginning of the surgery schedule and between procedures. Checks and replaces anesthesia gas tanks as needed.
- Preoperative :

- Retrieve special anesthesia supplies that are anticipated and / or requested by the person administering the anesthetic before and during surgery. Prepares complex equipment and supplies for hemodynamic monitoring. This varies based on location and may include peripheral arterial and pulmonary artery catheter transducers, EKG, pulse oximeter, and nerve simulators.
- Ensures monitoring equipment and supplies are ready.
- Ensures the anesthesia machine is ready for use including troubleshooting and correcting problems. May perform daily anesthesia equipment inspections including suction, electrical plugs, gas connections, oxygen and nitrous oxide cylinders.
- May assist in positioning patients for procedures.
- Intraoperative :
- Provide and set up disposable materials needed to collect shed blood. Based on location, may set up equipment for delivering salvaged and banked blood products with Cell Saver and Rapid infuser.
- Restock all used supplies as needed during a surgery.
- Dispose of contaminated materials and disinfect equipment in accordance with general operating room P&P concerning biohazardous waste.
- Postoperative :
- Clean anesthesia equipment in the Operating Room and outside locations following each procedure.
- Clean, maintain, and package used anesthesia materials and equipment.
- Inventories and orders anesthesia supplies.
- Run errands as requested by anesthesiologists / CRNAs / charge RN / other team members as appropriate to facilitate the preparation and conduct of anesthesia. Perform additional duties as requested by other team members.
