Who We Are
Founded in 1997 as a private, nonprofit place-management organization, the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) is a catalyst, facilitator, and thought leader in diversifying the economy, promoting public-private partnerships, and enhancing the downtown experience for all. We oversee a 140-block area of approximately 530 properties and numerous parks and public spaces, from Massachusetts Avenue NW on the north, including the Walter E. Washington Convention Center at Mount Vernon Square, to Constitution Avenue NW on the south, and from Louisiana Avenue NW on the east to 16th Street on the west.
Position Overview
The Safety / Hospitality and Maintenance Supervisor will assign, equip, motivate, monitor, and report on the daily work of 10-20 employees on any given shift. The supervisor will ensure compliance with all policies and procedures, including but not limited to safety, customer service, technology usage, uniform, professional image, attendance, punctuality, and productivity of team members and all rules and regulations in the employee handbook.
The supervisor will receive, prioritize, and execute work requests and provide timely and consistent reporting of all personnel activities in accordance with established procedures.
This position has a broad scope and represents DowntownDC BID to employees, the general public, property managers, and tenants. The individual directs the activities of assigned personnel, monitors their performance, and manages daily activities within the established policies and guidelines.
This is considered an essential position and will require you to report to work during inclement weather and emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities
The Safety / Hospitality and Maintenance Supervisor is an operations department leader for the workforce and often expected to personally perform the duties and responsibilities of DowntownDC SAMs, including homeless outreach, hospitality, safety, customer service, and communication functions. The supervisor may be assigned to day and / or evening shifts, which will include weekend shifts. Schedules may change with 2 weeks' advance notice at the needs of the DowntownDC BID. This position requires mandatory shifts, and advanced notice will be given when time permits.
The supervisor will :
Assign, equip, motivate, monitor, and report on the daily work of 10-20 employees per shift. Lead the operations department and often expected to personally perform the duties and responsibilities of DowntownDC SAMs, including homeless outreach, hospitality, cleaning, logistics, safety, customer service, and communication functions including Franklin Park. Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures, including but not limited to safety, accident / incident reporting, customer service, technology usage, uniform, and professional image, attendance, punctuality, and productivity of team members and operations base office etiquette. Receive, prioritize, and execute work requests and provide timely and consistent reporting of all personnel activities in accordance with established procedures. Assist management, as assigned, with scheduling, deployment, inventory, and reporting functions. Conduct roll calls, inspections, and information sessions : ensure that all posts / zone or assignments are covered, and that appropriate equipment and resources are in place. Assist with training and orientation of new employees. Evaluate employee performance on an ongoing basis; provide motivational support and correct deficiencies as needed. Conduct daily tours of all posts / zones and assignments, on foot, bicycle, or BID vehicles for effective quality control. Respond to emergency situations, follow proper protocols, and coordinate service for special events. Liaison with property managers and other Downtown BID members to provide ongoing communication and responsiveness to concerns. Operate company vehicles in accordance with specific regulations. Act as management's representative in explaining and enforcing policies and procedures, programmatic changes, and directives. Perform other duties as requested and assigned.
The DowntownDC SAM Supervisor reports to the Senior Supervisor and Deputy Director of Public Space Operations or another designee.
Qualifications
Prior experience as a supervisor of hourly public contact or service employees is required; a minimum of three years is preferred. Minimum five years' work experience in a related field, including law enforcement, security, tourism, hospitality, or other service industry preferred. Demonstrated leadership ability and professional demeanor required. Clear verbal communication skills, fluency in spoken English language required; bilingual preferred. Demonstrated ability to write information clearly. Good interpersonal skills, willingness, and ability to interact with a wide range of individuals is required. Tact, good judgment, and ability to think clearly and remain calm and positive under pressure. Physical stamina is required to perform duties outdoors 8-10 hours daily, in all weather conditions. This is a standing / walking position. Flexibility in scheduling, including some evenings and / or weekends, is required. Valid Driver's License and ability to drive company vehicles. High school education or equivalent required, as well as the ability to learn and retain directions, facts on area attractions and the Washington D.C. Metro system and major streets / highways required. Willingness and ability to represent management policies positively and consistently to employees, clients, and the general public are required.

Compensation
This position is full-time with an hourly pay range between $23.00 to $25.00 depending on experience.
