Under administrative direction, is responsible for reviewing and responding to orders, legal correspondence, and other correspondence to the District Court Judges; preparing legal documents; researching statutory and case law; performing special projects; answering questions; performing computer research; and performing related duties as required.
The responsibilities include :
- Reviewing and responding to orders and correspondence to the District Court Judges, District Clerk, and District Court Administration from Courts of Appeals, including Court of Criminal Appeals and the Western District of Texas.
- Preparing orders on Applications for Post-Conviction, Pre-Conviction, and Community Supervision Writs of Habeas Corpus, including acquiring attorney affidavits, reviewing files and transcripts, requesting additional documentation, and researching legal issues.
- Monitoring trial progress and responding to all requests from Judges.
- Researching statutory and case law and performing other special projects as assigned.
- Answering questions from outside agencies and the public regarding legal issues and court procedures.
- Drafting legislative proposals for District Court Judges to present at the Texas Legislature.
- Researching legal issues using all available resources, including case law and statutes such as the Code of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Appellate Procedure, and others.
- Preparing legal memoranda advising Judges of pertinent law and analysis.
- Assisting Court personnel with legal questions and research.
- Supervising Juvenile Courts Pre-Trial Services personnel and Criminal Courts Legal Interns.
- Monitoring appellate opinions and case law updates, and advising Judges accordingly.
- Participating in the interview process for legal interns, supervising and training them, and reviewing their work.
- Advising Civil District Court Judges on civil matters.
- Assisting with pro se litigants by answering questions, interpreting court orders, and reviewing files for procedural and substantive matters.
- Reviewing and responding to inmate correspondence, requests for bench warrants, and case coordination involving inmates.
- Coordinating bail hearings and consulting with related parties.
- Representing Civil District Court Judges in mandamus and contempt proceedings, including preparing legal documents and court appearances.
- Performing special projects as assigned by the General Administrative Counsel.
- Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications include :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence and four years of practice in administrative, litigation, or appellate law.Knowledge of court systems, legal terminology, and office procedures.Knowledge of relevant Texas codes and rules.Skills in task coordination, legal research, and operating office equipment.Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, analyze facts, and maintain professional relationships.Must be licensed to practice law in Texas, pass background checks, and clear pre-employment screenings.Preferred qualifications include bilingual ability in English and Spanish.
Working conditions are typical of an office environment, with occasional physical demands such as moving items up to 10 pounds and operating office equipment. The position may require working beyond 40 hours per week.
