Job Title : Director of Development & Advocacy
Reports To : Chief Operations Officer
Location : Richmond, VA (Hybrid)
Pay Range : $75,000 - $90,000
Position Type : Full-time, Exempt
Position Summary
The Director of Development & Advocacy is a key strategic leader responsible for driving both revenue generation and policy influence. This role leads the organization's fundraising strategy with a goal of raising $1 million+ annually through individual giving, grants, and events. In addition, the Director serves as Commonwealth Autism’s primary representative in statewide advocacy efforts, working to advance public policy aligned with our mission. This position reports directly to the COO and collaborates with internal and external partners to build meaningful relationships with funders, policymakers, and community allies.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising & Development
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive annual fundraising
strategy.
Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, foundations, andcorporate partners.
Manage all grant writing, reporting, and compliance processes. Currently manage a grants contractor.Plan and execute annual campaigns and donor-facing events with support frominternal teams.
Maintain accurate donor database records and track performance metrics to guide strategy.Government Relations & Advocacy
Develop and lead the organization’s state-level advocacy and public policy agenda.Represent Commonwealth Autism with legislators, agency leaders, and advocacy coalitions.Monitor legislation and regulatory issues impacting Autistic individuals and thedisability community.
Build strategic partnerships with peer organizations, policy networks, andcommunity stakeholders.
Prepare testimony, policy briefs, and position statements to advance theorganization’s goals.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with the CEO and program leadership to align fundraising andadvocacy with organizational priorities.
Work with CEO on diversifying revenue and fund sourcing strategy.Support and help the organization’s communications and marketing strategy,especially around donor engagement and advocacy messaging.
Provide regular updates and strategic recommendations to the leadership team and board.Work with Community Relations Manager to support the volunteer program anddonor relations processes.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE preferred.5-7+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, advocacy, or public affairs.Demonstrated success managing major gifts, grants, and events.Experience with government relations, advocacy campaigns, or public policy at the state level is strongly preferred.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences.Self-starter with strong project management skills and comfortable workingindependently.
