The City of Boerne Animal Care Services department provides services for the care of pets and animals while enforcing animal-related laws established by city ordinance. The department is committed to balancing the health, public safety, and welfare needs of people and animals in the community. If you have a love for pets and want to help, take care of the animals in our community, ACS would love to have you join their team. Your day-to-day tasks would include cleaning, maintenance, and sanitizing of kennels and all other areas of the facility; ensuring food and water are provided to animals; performing basic shelter care such as medicating, bathing, micro-chipping, and assisting the Animal Control Officers with euthanizing as needed. Responsible for providing excellent customer service over the phone and in-person to residents with inquiries to include but not limited to adoption, surrender, and dispatching Animal Control Officers to calls for service. Working conditions are in an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to temperature variations, infectious diseases, chemicals, disinfectants, unfavorable odors, and hostile animals.

Key Responsibilities :

• Performs departmental specific functions by attending to animals in the animal shelter; cleaning and disinfecting kennels and cages, litter boxes, feeding utensils, pans, and equipment, etc.; launder animal bedding and towels, sweeping and mopping floors, removing trash, maintaining grounds, and cleaning dog yards of feces.
• Safely and humanely handle animals of unknown health and temperament.
• Provides general care and feeding of animals by feeding, watering, exercising, and bathing.
• Assists Animal Control Officers with vaccinations, microchipping, administering medication, drawing blood for health checks, and assist and / or perform euthanasia.
• Assists in the preparation, transport, and documentation of specimens for rabies testing.
• Reports any health or behavioral problems displayed by animals to supervisor immediately.
• Maintains stock and storage rooms in a neat and organized manner. Stocks inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies, etc.
• Periodic transport of animals to the veterinarian clinic(s) for visits as needed.
• Assists the public with adoptions and redemptions by performing adoption procedures, assisting in reclaiming lost animals, directing the public to areas of the shelter, helping customers complete paperwork, recording animal information, and maintaining records.
• Follow-up on adoptions and redemptions by checking the computer system and adoption contracts for proof of vaccination and sterilization and sending notification letters if contracts are not met.
• Provides assistance to the general public by answering inquiries over the phone or in person, directing telephone calls, preparing and maintaining records, receiving paperwork and entering information into the computer system.
• Updates animal information in Shelter Management Database and various other computer programs i.e., word, excel, etc.
• Assists with maintaining the Animal Care Services webpage and other forms of social media used to promote the adoption of pets at the shelter.
• Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
• Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position; and
• Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications :

Work Environment :

Tasks involved include, but are not limited to standing, sitting, lifting, walking, running, bending, reaching, stretching, pushing, pulling, and carrying or using a force equal to 50 pounds or heavier. Must be able to work outdoors and in extreme working conditions, including but not limited to high and low temperatures, high humidity, rain, and snow. Ability to work in enclosed spaces, understand, learn, remember, and communicate information about the job, and work around animals, i.e., allergies, cat / dog feces, and fear of animals. Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and varying schedules.
