Henderson Engineers is looking to hire a Fire Engineering Manager to join their Grocery & Distribution team. An Engineering Manager serves as a hybrid discipline technical leader and people manager within their sector, maintaining a strong technical presence while also responsible for team development, performance feedback, and resource management. They lead a team of engineers and designers, mentoring and career pathing staff to deliver technical excellence and meet sector and organization-wide goals. They promote Henderson's design guidelines and a culture of continuous improvement.
In a limited capacity, an Engineering Manager designs complex building systems, prepares design documents and performs engineering calculations in coordination with project teams and multiple disciplines.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of engineering (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, or architectural) preferred. High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 12 years of relevant progressive experience required.
- Expert knowledge of engineering design, A&E industry codes, design guides and standards across a broad range of practices and projects.
- Working knowledge of earned value, contracts and construction processes.
- Working knowledge of Revit and Bluebeam Revu.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering design software applicable to your discipline.
- Demonstrated history of building trust-based relationships within teams and fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
- High emotional intelligence and ability to lead with empathy, clarity, and positive coaching through change.
- Experience growing others through feedback, career guidance and mentoring.
- High technical aptitude and ability to learn and teach systems and processes.
- Effective verbal and written communication with designers at all levels.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and to lead less-experienced designers.
- Adaptable to changing work environments and priorities.
- Ability to prioritize and direct multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching.

Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.Additional certifications such as BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD, etc. preferred.Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL) preferred.Performance as an Engineer of Record (EOR) preferred.Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a team of discipline-aligned engineers and designers within the assigned sector, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture and executing design projects.Act as a hiring manager and career coach, participate in interviews and provide performance feedback and guidance on skills progression.Participate in project scheduling meetings to align staff assignments with project scopes; monitor progress to meet objectives.Provide coaching and conduct individualized meetings to guide goal setting.Assist sector leaders with establishing goals, policies, objectives and standards at practice / sector level.Champion directives from technical leaders and facilitate upward feedback to leadership.Collaborate cross-functionally to manage project staff resources and budgets.Improve project and design quality through the quality review process and regular check-ins; may provide final reviews.Understand and apply Henderson's design guidelines and act as a technical resource for the team.Oversee project coordination activities, including scope and schedule coordination, client meetings, and project delivery.Foster a client-centric mindset within the team and share information for technical and process improvements.Drafting & Design
Direct and oversee preparation of design documents, system layouts, drawings, schematics and specifications from concept to completion.Review shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.Research feasibility and recommend system / equipment options; evaluate products for application.Provide solutions to complex engineering problems and ensure deliverables meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.Client Experience
Communicate with clients to develop requirements and scope; maintain proactive communication throughout the project.Address client questions and act as a resource for the team; visit job sites to observe conditions and progress.Resolve conflicts among owners, architects and contractors as needed.Identify gaps in knowledge and stay up to date on industry trends, codes and standards.Professional Engineer & Engineer of Record
Where applicable : perform at a high standard associated with PE licensing and Engineers of Record responsibilities, including signing / sealing projects as appropriate.
