Solid Waste Landfill Supervisor

Under limited supervision, performs supervisory, administrative and specialized skilled work in directing and coordinating the daily operations of the Landfill in the Wilson County Solid Waste Department. Work involves planning and coordinating Landfill operations, supervising and scheduling work of employees and maintaining daily quality assurance, including ensuring compliance with relevant local and state regulations. Employee is responsible for making sure Recycling Building is kept clean and organized. Employee is also responsible for determining grades for slopes and ditches, maintaining Landfill Buildings and Equipment, including heavy motorized equipment, and maintaining a variety of records, supplies, and equipment. Reports to the Solid Waste Director.
Plans, manages, and coordinates the daily operations of the Landfill in the Wilson County Solid Waste Department, considering weather conditions and ensuring adherence to Solid Waste disposal procedures and state and local disposal laws and regulations; ensures that waste being brought into Landfill meets acceptable materials regulations and permit requirements; enforces safety precautions according to policies and procedures.
Assigns, directs and supervises activities of Heavy Equipment Operators / Lead, Truck Drivers, and Laborers, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards; assists and advises subordinates, as necessary, resolving problems as non-routine situations arise.
Administers or makes recommendations for routine personnel matters affecting subordinates, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, scheduling, granting leave, appraising and disciplining, etc., submitting such records and reports as required by County management.
Specifies grade of slopes and ditches according to blueprints and monitors erosion control to ensure that waste is disposed of at proper elevations and in proper areas.
Operates one or more types of motorized heavy equipment to haul dirt, debris, refuse, and other materials and / or to construct or maintain Landfill sites, i.e. : bulldozers, front end loaders compactors, refuge trucks, trackhoes, etc.
Performs regular maintenance and repairs to heavy equipment; replaces worn or defective parts; cleans heavy equipment and pick-up trucks.
Performs administrative duties, prepares and maintains various records such as daily attendance records and maintenance records, and compiles data for reports such as fuel reports, as assigned, ensuring completion by specified deadlines and in accordance with established goals and objectives. Coordinate and schedule roll-off truck pulls.
Performs grounds keeping duties; cleans and maintains office and shop areas. Performs other related work as required.
Minimum training and experience : Graduation from high school supplemented by training in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and surveying and grading, and 3 to 5 years of experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment in Landfill operations, including supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities. Must have Class A Driver's License. Special requirement : Solid Waste Association of North America Certificate as Manager of Landfill Operations.
