Summary of Position :
The Charge Nurse directs and supervises nursing service of a group of patient-care units, and plans and directs activities to provide maximum care. Provides work direction to nursing staff while on duty.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Directs assignment and activities of nurses, nursing assistants and non-professional personnel and assists in the evaluation of their performance of the job.
- Participates in guidance and directs supervised personnel.
- Maintains contact with patients and assists in their plan of care.
- Completes daily Charge Nurse Checklist.
- Coordinates services provided by nursing personnel and personnel of other departments.
- Routinely reviews staff charting to be certain it is up to standards.
- With the aid of the CEO, assumes responsibility of the Nursing Department in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer.
- Interprets operating procedures and policies and reviews team performance to determine conformance to recognized standards.
- Plans and implements patient care pursuant to the care plan of the physician. Assesses patient needs for nursing care and establishes objectives for nursing actions. Organizes, directs, and supervises nursing personnel giving care.
- Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of patient care.
- Directs the development and adaptation of work technique and methods for resolution of unusual or complex nursing problems.
- Participates and cooperates with other departments to provide maximum patient care.
- Appropriately identifies staffing for current and following shift by calling in extra help or calling staff to stay home.
- Reports incidents appropriately as they occur.
- Other duties as assigned.

Language Skills :
Must be able to read and write English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, policies and technical procedures. Ability to write and correspond with team members.
Work Environment :
May be exposed to communicable diseases when working in a health care environment. Must possess strength and endurance as duty requires standing, walking, bending, lifting and pushing.
Physical Demands :
Standing, sitting, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting. Must have the ability to carry out the physical demands of the position required in caring for patients.
Any lifting of 35 lbs. or more requires the use of an assistive device and / or physical assistance.Exposure Category : 1
