THIS POSTING IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF COLORADO AT TIME OF APPLICATION. This recruitment will fill current and anticipated Special Agent vacancies statewide in various investigative assignments based in Regional offices in Golden / Lakewood, Pueblo and Grand Junction, and in Satellite offices in Alamosa, Eagle, and Montrose within the Colorado Department of Public Safety over the next 12 months. DURANGO VACANCY ONLY : Residents and non-residents of Colorado may apply; work will be performed primarily within 30 miles of the state border. Please see CBI Regional Map. This position is not subject to the Hiring Freeze as outlined in Executive Order D 2025 009 due to being critical to protecting the health, life and safety of Coloradans.

About the Department
The Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS) consists of five Divisions : Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM). The Executive Director's Office provides administrative and management services to the operating divisions.
COLORADO BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
CBI's primary mission is to respond to requests from sheriffs, police chiefs, district attorneys, other state agencies, and the Governor to assist in detecting, investigating and enforcing Colorado criminal laws. CBI investigates organized crime crossing jurisdictional boundaries, locates fugitives, provides statewide criminal justice information management, conducts background checks, and operates an internationally-accredited forensic laboratory system. About the Work Unit
Investigations Section supports local law enforcement in Major Crimes, Cold Cases, Fugitives, Sex Offenders, Crime Scene, Firearms and Narcotics; units include Regional Major Crimes, Cold Case, Crime Scene, Economic Crimes, Digital Forensics, Fugitive, Special Investigations Organized Crime and Firearms, and Special Investigations Illicit Marijuana.
About the Job
This position is POST Certified and exists to collect, preserve, analyze and interpret physical evidence in criminal cases and to conduct investigations of major crimes, including documentation, interviews, surveillance, informant handling, undercover work, search and seizure, arrests and prosecutions. The Special Agent II will perform duties with guidance from senior / lead agents and seek professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
Special Agent II
Investigative Participation
Conduct lengthy complex investigations (e.g., homicide, officer-involved shootings, serious assaults, other felonies) for local / state agencies or as directed. This includes interviews, evidence searches, comprehensive reports, arrests, required training, and ongoing professional development. May consult with Field Training Agent, a Special Agent III, or Supervisor.
Legal Procedures
Write affidavits, warrants and case filings for courts; testify in court and advise prosecutors on complex investigations.
Criminal Intelligence Analysis
Collects, analyzes and disseminates criminal intelligence; recruit and supervise informants; obtain information from various sources.
Investigative Analysis
Analyze and corroborate legal and agency documents in support of complex investigations.
Special Agent III
Expanded Investigative Participation, Legal Procedures, Criminal Intelligence Analysis and Investigative Analysis as described above, with progression to higher responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Two paths for Special Agent II : 1) Five (5) years of professional investigative or detective experience with a law enforcement agency plus Colorado POST certification; 2) Bachelor's degree plus one (1) year of experience and Colorado POST certification; or 3) a combination equaling five (5) years with POST certification. If education substitutes for work experience, provide unofficial transcripts. POST certification notice : The agency does not sponsor POST; candidates with existing certification or who obtain it by December 1, 2025 will be considered; those who do not by that date will not proceed.
Minimum Qualifications for Special Agent III
Six (6) years of investigative experience with a law enforcement agency plus POST certification; or a bachelor's degree with two (2) years of experience; or a combination equaling six (6) years with POST certification. If substituting education, provide unofficial transcripts. POST sponsorship rules as above.
