Job Title : Environmental Specialist – Wastewater Treatment Focus
Reports To : Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager
Status : Exempt / Salaried
Supervises : None
General Description : The Environmental Specialist role is responsible for overseeing the operational performance and regulatory compliance of two wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant processes. Although this position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities, it involves coordinating with on-site operators, maintenance teams, and contractors to support consistent plant performance and compliance across both locations.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Operational Oversight :
- Provide support to Health, Safety and Environmental Manager.
- Oversee daily operations at two wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring they meet regulatory and performance standards.
- Monitor treatment processes, evaluate system performance, and troubleshoot operational issues including equipment malfunctions and process imbalances.
- Work cohesively with plant operators and maintenance staff
- Maintain detailed and accurate operational records, including flow data, chemical usage, and effluent quality.
- Prepare performance and compliance reports for internal use and submission to regulatory agencies including but no limited to : Solid and Hazardous Waste management and disposal, Clean Air Act compliance, Clean Water Act compliance, Emergency Response, Pollution Prevention Planning and Control.
Maintenance Coordination :
Collaborate with maintenance personnel to ensure preventative maintenance of treatment plant equipment such as flow meters, pumps, blowers, and motors.Plan and track preventive maintenance efforts to minimize equipment downtime and ensure operational reliability.Support contractors and vendors performing repairs, upgrades, and system installations.Compliance & Safety :
Ensure operations at both facilities comply with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental regulations.Maintain compliance records and assist with audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.Promote and reinforce safety practices and participate in safety inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards.Additional Responsibilities :
Routine laboratory testing on wastewater samples for process control and compliance verification.Contribute to the development and implementation of operational improvements and capital projects.Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and implement recommendations in support of established goals and objectives.Perform other related duties as assigned.Requirements :
Required (Basic) Education / Experience / Competencies and Other Skills :
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Wastewater Technology, or a related field.3–5 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations.Valid wastewater operator certification (as required by state / local regulations) preferred.Must complete training, testing, and continuing education to become a Certified Wastewater Operator through the Wisconsin DNR certification program.Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes, plant operations, and regulatory compliance.Strong working knowledge of the OSHA regulations.Mathematical competency and proficiency with basic computer programs.Ability to understand, follow, and communicate moderately complex oral and written instructions.Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.Outstanding attention to detail and able to multitask.Ability to travel regularly between two treatment plant locations.Physical Demands :
May require working outdoors and in confined spaces, exposure to treatment chemicals, and variable weather conditions.Must be able to lift and move materials / equipment up to 50 pounds as needed.Stand for up to 8 hours per shift.Will require computer usage at times for extended periods.Pass a drug & alcohol screen as well as a general background check.Work Environment / Environment Condition :
Food plant environment. Must adhere to all food and plant safety policies and regulations. .The atmosphere may be humid, hot, and cold depending on the weather.Will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.Will be required to travel between facilities.Benefits Package :
