Water Pipefitter Specialist (Fort Carson)
The starting pay rate for this position is $42.71 / hour followed by an increase to $44.85 / hour after successfully completing probation.
Colorado Springs Utilities continues expanding its water wastewater utility services across the Pikes Peak region. As a result, we are seeking a Water Pipefitter Specialist to work with complex infrastructure designed to transport and treat sanitary and industrial effluents in compliance with environmental regulations, as well as operating wastewater and industrial wastewater systems and mainlines. In this role, you will support the installation, repair, and maintenance of critical infrastructure and assets, including water mains, service lines, hydrants, pressure-reducing / regulating valves, flow control valves, fire hydrants, and pressure tanks.
This job will primarily support water utility work on the Fort Carson military installation.
A day in the life of a Water Pipefitter Specialist may include :
- Performing tapping of low and high-pressure water pipelines
- Informing customers of scheduled water work
- Responding to emergencies involving water mains and service lines - and responding to emergency management calls 24 / 7
- Provide operational readiness and support of our infrastructure and services by participating in a week-long on-call rotation (subject to change)
- Inspecting the condition of existing water pipes for cathodic protection
- Locating underground pipelines and utilities so that work can be safely performed
- Reading and complying with blueprints and specifications for projects
- Training, coaching, and providing subject matter expertise and guidance to Water Pipefitters and Apprentices
- Performing repairs on water pipelines to include heat and chill lines
- Maintaining PRV, Pumps, Wells, and Water Storage Tanks
- Perform PM's and routine hydrant flushing
- Ability to read and understand maps, construction drawings, specifications, and as-builds
- Perform clearances for safe water main maintenance
Who You Are
Must have completed a Water Pipefitter Apprenticeship (DOL or NDOL); or offer a minimum of four (4) years of experience installing and repairing water mains and service lines. Pipefitters trained outside of a formal training / apprenticeship program must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with current journey pipefitters at Colorado Springs UtilitiesPossession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is requiredClass B Commercial Driver's license with airbrake endorsement is required at the time of hire and Class A must be obtained within a year of hireA Colorado Level III Water Distribution Certification is required to be obtained within 3 years of hireMust be able to meet the general requirements to obtain access to work on a U.S. Military baseWhat You Can Expect Working at Fort Carson :
The Water Pipefitter Specialist will help perform and assist in the activities related to the construction, operations, and maintenance of the Fort Carson water and wastewater distribution and collection systems. Under the Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA), Colorado Springs Utilities is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Fort Carson's water, electric and gas infrastructure. Currently, however, wastewater will become a 4th service January 1, 2026, this position will begin as soon as possible. Pursuant to the IGSA, this position will support operations and maintenance of Fort Carson's distribution and collection systems up to and including complex infrastructure designed to transport and treat sanitary and industrial effluents in compliance with environmental regulations, as well as operating wastewater and industrial wastewater systems and mainlines. In this role, you will support the installation, repair, and maintenance of critical infrastructure and assets, including water mains, hydrants, pressure-reducing / regulating valves, flow control valves, fire hydrants, and pressure tanks with utilities best practices. This position will be part of a water and wastewater crew that is responsible for managing the construction and maintenance of new developments, commercial construction, outage response, and providing construction crew oversight in both distribution and collections at Fort Carson under the IGSA. You will work onsite at Fort Carson but may be called to support Colorado Springs Utilities' water and wastewater distribution and collection systems construction crews as needed. Within this role, you will be part of a team that is responsible for a wide variety of technical duties and will ensure that all activities adhere to Colorado Springs Utilities' Safety Rules and Construction Standards. Additionally, the position requires regular interaction with numerous internal and external customers as well as proficient management of resources, equipment, and personnel to ensure the successful completion, performance, and review of the water and wastewater work.
