Overview
Technology Support Analyst – Journey is a full-time permanent staff position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The role supports Life Safety and network systems, maintains databases, performs network administration, installs hardware, and assists with procurement and office management.
Responsibilities
- Maintain Central Alarm Receiving System (CARS) and associated databases for fire alarm detection, security, and equipment alarm systems.
- Provide technical, programming, and application support for CARS, Digital Communication Systems (DCS), Fire Alarm Detection Systems (FADS), Security Systems (SEC), and Equipment Alarm Systems (EAS).
- Perform primary network system administration on Life Safety servers and workstations, including software and hardware maintenance, and manage the campus Fire Panel Online Monitoring (FPOM) and new Radio Mesh Network System.
- Log service requests using Remedy, track progress, analyze patterns, research bug fixes, and implement solutions; communicate with supervisors regarding unresolved problems.
- Manage user enrollment, system security, and database management using Microsoft SQL Server and Access; allocate system storage and plan future storage requirements.
- Install and upgrade database servers and application management tools; maintain hardware supporting servers, PCs, IP-based alarms, and peripheral network equipment.
- Configure and maintain network IP structure for alarms sent over network, and perform installations or modifications of Life Safety Dialers onsite or remote dial-in.
- Assist with purchasing office supplies, purchase order numbers for projects, parts or receipts, and keep proper record keeping; assign work orders to shop employees.
- Assist Access Control Shop 245303 with programming security cameras prior to installation and with camera server assistance.
Qualifications
Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Networking Technology, or related area with one year of experience in IT; or Bachelor's degree with one year of experience in IT; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Journey level requires an additional one year of experience; advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.Ability to diagnose and resolve account NSR (Non-Receipt of Signal) issues and communicate findings to technicians.Proficiency in installing, upgrading, and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access databases.Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and data management.Experience reading mechanical, electrical, and building blueprints / drawings related to alarm networks.Knowledge of industry terminology for clear communication with contractors, project managers, IT personnel, and field technicians.Mandated employee report to work and support essential University operations, even during adverse weather or emergency conditions.Required Licenses / Certifications
Individuals not holding NICET Level II Certification for Fire Alarm Systems must gain certification within four (4) years.NC Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.Preferred Qualifications
Recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry with factory certification by at least two major manufacturers for programming and operations.Experience reviewing phases of building design in reference to life safety systems.Experience conducting system operational testing, inspections, commissioning, and working with state agencies (NCDOI, NCDOL, NC SCO).Working knowledge of University Purchasing procedures and NICET Level I Certification for Fire Alarm Systems.Physical / Mental Requirements
Work with hands and arms overhead for extended periods; work on hands and knees, potentially crawling under floors and buildings.Move heavy objects weighing 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation; climb and work from high ladders and scaffolding.Work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods, walk significant distances daily, and climb stairs.EEO Statement
