About us : The administering and maintaining of the cemetery grounds is the responsibility of the City's Cemetery and Grounds Division. The maintenance is perpetual in nature. This means the City will always be responsible for the mowing and trimming of grass and other duties required to maintain a pleasing appearance.
What you will do : As a Crew Leader, you will lead a team in maintaining the City's cemeteries, parks, traffic islands, and public spaces. Your responsibilities include operating various equipment, overseeing daily operations, and ensuring outdoor areas are well-maintained, safe, and visually appealing. Key tasks involve mowing, planting, tree care, and equipment operation, all while providing guidance and leadership to your crew.

Crew Leadership and Supervision :
- Leads a grounds crew, fostering a safe and efficient work environment while motivating team members to complete tasks to a high standard.
- Conducts employee performance evaluations, offering guidance, feedback, and recommending job assignments to enhance team productivity.
- Trains crew members on proper grounds maintenance techniques and equipment operation to ensure competence and safety.
Grounds Maintenance and Operations :
Performs mowing and weed-eating tasks across cemeteries, parks, rights of ways, traffic islands, creek banks, and other City grounds, ensuring a neat and maintained appearance.Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe for grave digging and other excavation tasks as required.Drives a leaf truck and operates a leaf vacuum to collect curbside leaves, contributing to seasonal clean-up efforts.Plants flowers and trees, prunes shrubs, and provides ongoing care, including watering and feeding plants to promote healthy growth.Shovels snow and ice from public areas to maintain accessibility during winter weather conditions.Equipment and Resource Management :
Identifies equipment repair needs and informs the supervisor, ensuring timely repairs and minimal downtime.Ensures that the crew is properly equipped with the tools and resources required for efficient project completion.Performs routine equipment operation and maintenance duties to support grounds upkeep.Tree and Landscape Care :
Evaluates and reports on tree needs across various parks and City grounds, ensuring proper care and safety.Prunes trees and shrubs, and manages plant care to maintain the aesthetic and health of public spaces.Safety and Quality Control :
Enforces safety procedures on the jobsite, ensuring that all work is completed with a focus on team well-being.Inspects crew work regularly to ensure high-quality standards are met in all tasks performed.Special and Weekend Assignments :
Assists with scheduled weekend assignments for burial services, contributing to the maintenance and respectful management of cemetery operations.Performs additional duties as assigned, ensuring comprehensive grounds management.Qualifications
Equipment Operation and Grounds Maintenance Expertise :
In-depth knowledge of the equipment used in municipal grounds maintenance, including backhoes, loaders, mowers, tractors, trucks, leaf blowers, and weed eaters.Skilled in operating maintenance equipment to ensure efficient completion of tasks, such as mowing, fertilizing, and raking.Landscaping and Plant Care Proficiency :
Considerable understanding of landscaping techniques, including proper planting methods, seeding, and strawing.Expertise in identifying tree and shrub species and implementing proper planting and maintenance techniques.Knowledge of fertilization and basic plant care practices to maintain the beauty and health of public spaces.Chemical Application and Safety :
Extensive knowledge of safe and effective chemical use in landscaping and grounds maintenance, ensuring proper application to protect people and the environment.Leadership and Crew Management :
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a grounds maintenance crew, delegating tasks and responsibilities while maintaining high performance standards.Proven ability to motivate and manage crew members with firmness and tact, ensuring smooth operations.Strong leadership skills, ensuring the crew works efficiently and in alignment with project goals.Independence and Instruction Compliance :
Capable of working independently and completing tasks with minimal supervision, while also following instructions from supervisors with precision.Ability to identify maintenance needs across various structures, grounds, and facilities, and report them to management for prompt resolution.Communication and Relationship Building :

High School Diploma or GED Equivalency and considerable work experience in grounds maintenance, or turf maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Requirements :
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred or must obtain a CDL within twelve (12) months after date of hire.Possession of or ability to obtain Turf & Ornamental Pesticide LicenseSupplemental Information
