Overview
Electrical Engineer, Transmission Metering. Location : Akron or Toledo. Base pay range : $80,000.00 / yr - $120,000.00 / yr. This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The engineer position will be part of the Transmission Metering group within FirstEnergy's Transmission Operations organization, owning and supporting all aspects of electric metering, including emerging electronic metering technology, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), communications and data requirements. The group is the centralized owner of all transmission metering equipment, standards, and processes across all FirstEnergy operating companies.
Responsibilities
- Research and evaluation of emerging metering technologies and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and develop recommendations for implementation and support on FirstEnergy's transmission system.
- Manage diverse projects, processes, and programs affecting transmission metering with minimal supervision.
- Provide technical support for transmission operational metering including installation, programming, maintenance, and potential replacement of metering equipment. This includes issuing and providing device configuration settings.
- Apply engineering skills and operational knowledge to identify and resolve metering problems and / or data integrity issues.
- Coordinate, manage, and prioritize the repair and replacement of defective metering equipment with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in development or modification of procedures, standards, practices and / or processes related to transmission metering.
- Specify field test equipment and procedures for testing / commissioning of substation metering equipment.
- Ensure metering standards and practices meet regulatory standards and requirements (FERC, NERC, PJM, and state regulatory bodies).
- Serve as the subject matter expert for all aspects related to transmission metering.
- Stay engaged with PJM and industry peers to establish best practices, identify industry trends / issues, and develop reporting metrics.
- Review new project scopes for additional metering needs and issued meter-related projects to ensure metering design is correct.
- Prepare technical reports and summaries, and prepare / make presentations when necessary.
- Produce results with direct, positive impact on the company; work independently and with others to achieve goals; meet customer needs with professional and timely service.
- Demonstrate a solid commitment to safety.
- An Engineer IV will perform above responsibilities with more proficiency and independence and may be assigned additional responsibilities.
Qualifications
Engineer III Level
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited school is required.At least 3 years of professional engineering experience required.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to work independently on broad assignments involving compilation, preparation, and analysis of statistical / analytical data and reports.Preferred ability to review substation one-line, three-line, schematic, and wiring diagrams.Ability to analyze complex problems and demonstrate good judgment in decision-making.Proven ability to manage diverse projects and multi-task as needed.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and with teams across locations.Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).Self-motivated, customer-focused, and results-oriented with a desire to learn and grow.Previous utility experience is desired but not required.Familiarity with metering equipment and systems is a plus; familiarity with instrument transformers is a plus.Familiarity with EMS, MV-90, Cascade, Powerbase, Unifier, CrossBow, EDOA, and / or SAP is a plus.Knowledge of NERC, PJM standards and policies, ANSI / IEEE metering standards, substations, and related equipment is a plus.Understanding of VPN, TCP / IP, ModBus and / or DNP protocols and communications technologies (fiber, wireless, internet) is a plus.Engineer IV Level
Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience required.A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.Ability to effectively lead multi-discipline team initiatives and work with minimal supervision.Engineers at this level are expected to mentor others.Benefits, Compensation & Workforce Diversity
