Job Summary
Under the general direction of the EOP Director and general supervision of one of the EOP Assistant Directors, the EOP Academic Counselor provides direct services to EOP students with programs to support the academic success, retention and graduation of EOP students. The EOP Academic Counselor serves as the project lead and resident expert in one of the following initiatives / programs within the EOP department : Undocumented Students Services (USS), First-Gen, and Wellness initiative. An area of focus / emphasis will not preclude awareness of the other EOP student demographics.
The counselor will provide academic and personal counseling / guidance and manage student cases to support development and success as university students. The role involves collaborating with campus partners, advising students, implementing retention programs and special projects, supervising student staff, and engaging in professional development to apply best practices and research-based methodologies.
Responsibilities
- 50% - Academic / Personal Counseling and Case Management : provide multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges to at-risk populations; lead efforts to plan and provide programming, advising, support services, wellness and referrals; establish partnerships with campus units to resolve sensitive student issues; conduct analyses of student issues and develop solutions; advise students on academic planning and personal development; escalate cases to appropriate campus teams as needed; meet with students individually and in groups; communicate regularly with students including those on leave; maintain institutional relationships with students on leave or returning to complete studies.
- 25% - Program Development and Coordination : organize EOP programming; develop and edit materials; implement collaborative programs; facilitate group discussions; hire, train and supervise graduate interns and paraprofessionals; supervise EOP student staff and collaborators; coordinate wellness activities for EOP cohorts.
- 10% - Project Management : implement special projects related to educational equity, serve on campus committees, collaborate with campus units to increase inclusion of EOP students, liaise with student services units and academics as assigned, disseminate best practices, and coordinate additional duties.
- 10% - Professional Development and Training : develop and implement specialized programs; facilitate workshops; establish partnerships with social services and community groups; mentor student interns; stay informed on trends affecting EOP students; train campus staff on counseling practices; develop training programs for student staff and colleagues; engage in ongoing professional development.
- 5% - Program Evaluation and Reporting : lead strategic goal development for EOP populations; analyze data to identify trends and measure retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes; prepare reports; track and brief stakeholders on cases and outcomes; utilize tools such as SSC / Slug Success to report outreach and engagement.
Qualifications
Required : Bachelor's degree in a related area.Knowledge of counseling theories and practice, learning and development, and strategies to enhance student growth and achievement.Experience with counseling methodologies, group facilitation, mentoring, coaching, and advocacy; familiarity with issues facing low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, and immigrant students.Ability to analyze complex situations, develop solutions, and administer programs for diverse student needs; experience with data analysis, reporting, and program evaluation.Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students; familiarity with FERPA and related policies; reliability and timely reporting.Experience with case management on a college campus; ability to initiate and coordinate services and programs for students.Proficiency with computers and technology for word processing, research, calendars, and professional communication.Preferred : Master's degree in education, counseling, social work or a related field.Special Conditions of Employment
