This is an on-site position located in either Akron, Ohio, Morristown, NJ, Fairmont, WV, or Reading or Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Position
Substation Design Standards Engineer. The role requires self-direction to create and manage engineering designs, equipment and standards for the Substation Engineering group within FirstEnergy. The position will work with a staff of engineers, survey crews, drafters / layouts, both internal and external, on projects from estimation through construction and record update. The role reports on project progress and advises of issues that could affect successful completion. It provides technical support to Substation and Transmission personnel, Real Estate, Project Management and Construction crews, verifying safety, accuracy, and budget alignment to meet in-service dates.
Responsibilities
- Creating engineering designs and work scope for substation projects and confirming documentation and support is available to necessary personnel. Items may include steel structures, foundations, clearances, layout drawings, grounding, oil containment, lightning protection, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Ensure designs support a safe environment for transmission lines and substations personnel, contractors and the public.
- Prepare bills-of-material and specifications to procure equipment and materials for a substation project.
- Prepare and file applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary.
- Review NESC clearance requirements and coordinate with Maintenance personnel to ensure public safety.
- Assist Real Estate in acquiring substation property by coordinating sketches, maps, exhibits and easement plans.
- Direct technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects.
- Work with outside engineering firms, vendors, equipment manufacturers and consultants.
- Provide engineering support to employees to learn standards, procedures, designs, and related issues.
- Analyze engineering issues, structures, equipment, etc., and recommend solutions and alternative designs.
- Prepare estimates for proposed projects.
- Review manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications.
- Conduct design reviews, plant audits, and test witnessing at manufacturer facilities as necessary.
- Evaluate equipment ratings and requirements to facilitate ordering aligned with project in-service dates.
- Manage equipment orders for substation projects from initial request through delivery (technical details, bid evaluation, schedule, drawing review, design review, testing, and delivery).
- Support cross-unit communication regarding project needs and convene internal schedule compliance review meetings to ensure deliverables meet schedule and budget.
- Research and explore new technologies to automate work processes, increase efficiency and reduce human error.
- Ensure standards and equipment specifications are up to date and align with industry best practices.
- Participate in industry meetings to shape FirstEnergy's involvement (e.g., IEEE, EPRI).
- Ability to obtain Engineer in Training and Professional Engineering license is preferred; advancement may require stamping and sealing drawings as a Professional Engineer when necessary.

Qualifications
Engineer III
Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET-accredited institution required. Acceptable alternatives : PE license; or a non-ABET electrical engineering degree plus an advanced degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.Minimum 2 years of engineering experience required. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate preferred.Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD. Knowledge of FileNet, SAP, and Cascade a plus but not required.Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment.Ability to manage multiple projects and work under deadlines and changing conditions.Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships across FE, outside firms and manufacturers.Ability to work independently or in teams with various FE groups and outside parties.Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.Strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.Self-directed with the ability to work with limited instruction.Willingness to travel within the service area and to manufacturer locations; available for extra and irregular hours.Engineer IV
Bachelors in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required; acceptable alternatives : PE license or a non-ABET degree plus an advanced degree from ABET-accredited program.PE license preferred.Minimum 5 years of engineering experience required.Project management skills and ability to lead multi-discipline teams.Proficient in team leadership, facilitation, conflict management, decision making, teamwork, and influence management.Excellent interpersonal and cooperation skills to lead teams and collaborate with all levels of the organization.Experience leading technical initiatives with subject matter experts, research firms, and consultants.Strong written and oral communication skills, including presenting information and leading meetings.A strong aptitude for mentoring.Compensation

Engineer III (4-10 years) : Standard Range $82,025-$115,800; NJ Range $98,430-$138,960
Engineer IV : Standard Range $100,725-$142,200; NJ Range $120,870-$170,640
