Under general direction, to plan, organize, and direct activities of the Building and Safety Services Section of the Fire Department Life Safety Division including plan checks, related inspections, and to perform related work as required.
The Building and Safety Services Manager is designated as the Building Official and responsible for management of the Building and Safety Services Section of the Fire Department's Life Safety Division. This Section is responsible for all building regulation services and programs, including : plan checking, electrical, structural, plumbing, mechanical, and other relevant codes and regulations. The incumbent is involved in a high level of contact with contractors and the general public. The incumbent receives direction from the Fire Chief, or his designee, on policy and day-to-day operations.
Based upon screening of the City application, rsum, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to : written examination, panel interview and / or performance examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made. As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician. Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
Essential Functions / Examples of Duties

Typical Qualifications
Education and experience : Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is Bachelor's degree in architecture, building / construction technology, engineering, fire protection engineering, or a related field AND four (4) years in plan checking and / or the enforcement of building codes; preferably with a public agency. Prior experience with a public agency working with Fire Codes is highly desirable.
Substitution : Qualifying experience in building trades, construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of college course work on the basis of two (2) years of qualifying experience for one (1) year of college.
License required : Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. Possession of Building Inspector and Plans Examiner Certifications by the International Conference of Building Officials; and possession of OR ability to obtain certification as a Building Official by the Council of American Building Officials, within nine (9) months of appointment. Possession of ICBO / AACE and / or SCACEO certificates is highly desirable.
