Overview
Mechanical Design Engineer, Launch role at Tesla. This position is part of the Residential Energy Mechanical Design Team and involves release, launch, ramp, and sustaining of existing and next generation Supercharger products in Gigafactory Nevada. You will be part of the global team that designs and executes Residential Energy hardware for Tesla.
What To Expect As a launch and sustaining engineer, you will be the local expert in the factory regarding product design critical-to-quality features, function, etc. You will be the chief problem solver in the region, including root cause analysis of manufacturing and field issues, hands-on test design, and product design to support yield or reliability improvements. The role requires strong engineering / physics fundamentals and hands-on problem solving. You should be a team player who can collaborate with factory-based colleagues. You must be self-motivated, disciplined, and adaptable in a fast-moving environment.
This role is for a hands-on, do-it-yourself type personality who takes direct responsibility and acts quickly to solve problems. You will be the main on-site contact representing the design team and will work in a large cross-functional manufacturing environment, communicating goals and objectives clearly while maintaining healthy working relationships. The role requires people skills in addition to technical abilities and a flexible, adaptive mindset.
What Youll Do
- Serve as local design authority for line launches, design-changes, trials, deviations / dispositions, root-cause analysis, etc.
- Think like a design engineer : understand and uphold product function and requirements in your work
- Support and improve manufacturing
- Design fixtures and equipment to improve quality and yield; brainstorm design, process, and equipment updates to make the product better
- Support local supply-chain parts readiness and quality; collaborate with SIE / Quality teams
- Sustaining design work including BOM changes, part revisions, drawing revisions, bench-tests to characterize part / product problems, factory or field teardowns, etc.
- Support the field service team with issue identification, root cause analysis, and resolution of field issues
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experienceMinimum 5 years of experience as a design, process, or manufacturing engineer, preferably in automotiveStrong engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and electronicsProficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5 / V6 experience is a plus but not mandatoryProficiency with statistics and data analysisDemonstrated hands-on abilities (e.g. machine shop skills, technical hobbies / projects, etc.)Preferred experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding / brazing, plating, heat treating, and bondingBenefits
