Are you ready to play a critical role in building and maintaining Virginia's transportation infrastructure?

We are seeking dedicated and skilled Construction Inspectors to work on challenging and rewarding projects across the state for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

About the Role :

  • As a VDOT Construction Inspector, you will monitor and inspect construction projects, including roadways, structures, bridges, utilities, and maintenance work.
  • Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that construction activities and materials comply with VDOT specifications, approved plans, and contract documents.
  • This involves working efficiently and in a timely manner to achieve on-time, on-budget projects with high quality and safety.
  • This position requires physically demanding work in field conditions.
  • You must be capable of climbing, crawling, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds, working at heights, in confined spaces, and traversing embankments.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Monitor and inspect contractor's work for conformance with contract plans and specifications.
  • Observe and monitor contractor’s construction equipment.
  • Inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance.
  • Review placement of and perform tests on construction materials.
  • Verify correct materials delivered and installed, and track percentage of work completed.

    • Apply engineering principles in the inspection and documentation of construction activities.

    Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans.

  • Read, interpret, and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction contracts, and other project management documents.
  • Prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files, including submitting daily reports.
  • Provide pre-construction, during construction, and post-construction photos of the site.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • This includes diplomatic communication with job-site foreman and crew, and potentially interfacing with clients, state / federal agencies, and other disciplines.
  • Work independently and potentially oversee the work of others (especially for Senior roles).
  • Coordinate with residents and businesses in affected construction areas.

    • Qualifications :

  • Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications, and terminology.
  • Civil construction inspection or related construction experience is sought.

    • Experience applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO / DB guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction.

  • Experience with highway or bridge construction is required for some roles.
  • Demonstrated inspection and management experience with roadway and bridge construction, utility construction, and related pavement work may be required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of construction inspection experience is required.
  • Senior roles may require experience overseeing the work of others and a broad range of road / bridge inspection activities with a DOT or consultant firm.
  • Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

    • Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles.

  • Ability to read, interpret / analyze plans and contracts.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain files.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment and computer software applications.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel formulas, Site Manager, or PlanGrid is a plus.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is typically required.
  • A bachelor's degree in construction management or related field may be an alternative qualification for some positions.

    • Required Certifications and Licenses :

  • Valid driver’s license is essential.

    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, VDOT construction inspection and materials testing certifications VDOT Certifications Soil and Aggregate Compaction - NICET LEVEL II Asphalt Field Level I & II Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field - ACI Concrete Field Level I, or WACEL Concrete I, or NICET LEVEL II Pavement Marking Slurry Surfacing Surface Treatment Flagger Certification GRIT (Guardrail Certification) Salary Information :

  • Salary ranges for VDOT Construction Inspector roles can vary based on experience level, specific certifications held, and location.

    • Construction Inspection Coordinator (7 years related experience or more) - Range :

  • $44 - $56 / hr Senior Construction Inspector (7 years related experience or more) - Range : $43 - $54 / hr Construction Inspector (3 to 7 years related experience) - Range : $36 - $40 / hr Benefits : Our comprehensive benefits package includes Health, Vision, and Dental insurance, 401(k) plans (with match), Holidays and Paid Time Off Other Requirements : Availability for overtime and / or weekends may be necessary.
