Summary : Streetwork Project is an innovative outreach-counseling program for homeless youth in Manhattan, which utilizes a harm reduction approach. Services include counseling, case management, peer education and outreach, HIV testing and prevention, drop-in center, support groups, needle exchange, acupuncture, mental health services, legal and medical care, and basic needs (hot meals, pantry, shower, laundry, clothing, and personal hygiene supplies). The Community Outreach component expands upon our existing services to enhance stability, skills and access to resources for youth. The Coordinator will work with youth to develop community connections to support educational, job readiness, and skills needed for healthy independent living.
Responsibilities :
- Provide workshops, groups and trainings in the area of Independent Living Skills (ILS);
- Develop curricula for individualized and group ILS programming;
- Serve as liaison with city-wide agencies offering job training, employment placement, and other resource options for clients;
- Develop and maintain relationships with educational institutions available to clients;
- Assist youth with job searches, interviewing skills, job performance skills, and job readiness and placement;
- Development and maintenance of all program resources and referral contacts, including all Streetwork sites;
- Development and up-keep of a central resource library; development of on- site resource library for all Streetwork sites;
- Assisting counselors with selecting appropriate referral options;
- Escorting clients to referrals, when appropriate;
- Advocate with outside agencies and resource or entitlement programs on behalf of program clients;
- Coordinate and facilitate community meetings with stakeholders with the aim of informing of RHY (Runaway & Homeless Youth) needs, disseminate information and cultivate resources and additional sources of support available for youth;
- Attendance at staff trainings, staff meetings, and staff group process workshops;
- Attend appropriate trainings in the community related to available resources, referral development, and independent living skills.
- Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients.
Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 4 years of related work experience;Three years’ experience working with at-risk / homeless adolescents or two years of high-quality work demonstrated at Streetwork ProjectTwo years specialized experience in the field of education, community outreach / organizing, job training or teaching independent living skills required;Extensive knowledge of New York City resources and systems required;Experience in public speaking / presentations.Required :
Bachelors Degree or 4 years of related work experienceExperience with LGBTQ, homeless and street-involved youth populations required;Group work experience required;Compassionate approach to others and openness to new ideas;Dynamic energy, able to multi-task and negotiate multiple demands on attention;Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others;Clear and concise verbal and written communication skill, excellent interpersonal and organization skills;Genuine interest in working with disenfranchised youth and young adults;Understanding of and ability to work from harm reduction perspective;Demonstrated high levels of initiative and ability to work independently;Excellent organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills;Preferred :
Spanish- speaking or French speaking skillsBlood / Fluid Exposure Risk :
