Assistant General Superintendent
The Assistant General Superintendent supports the General Superintendent in overseeing and managing daily Field Operations. This role involves ensuring that work is performed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications, budgets, and schedules. The Assistant General Superintendent works closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and field crews to maintain quality standards, enforce safety protocols, and facilitate timely project completion.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Safety : Actively participates in all safety training sessions. Assists in identifying training opportunities and contributes to developing and delivering safety content. Regularly observes and provides feedback to employees to promote and reinforce a behavioral-based safety culture. Guides crews in maintaining a safe work environment by enforcing company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and other applicable safety standards. Ensures timely and accurate reporting of safety issues in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Quality : Participate in the bidding and preconstruction process to familiarize oneself with the Owner, Engineer, and Management project expectations. Maintains knowledge of local, county, and state rules and regulations relating to projects and informs crews of how to act accordingly. Stays up to date on construction means, methods, and procedures. Ensures all work follows specified quality standards. Inspects field work for quality compliance, materials for quality compliance, and reviews the assembly of manufacturer's literature and drawings before work starts.
Efficiency : Provides support to the General Superintendent in identifying projects and personnel with opportunities for efficiency gains. Controls costs by efficiently utilizing manpower, equipment, materials, and other resources to minimize cost. Uses HCSS Heavy Job Software to determine most cost-effective production standards. Supports management of day-to-day operations in the field including scheduling and coordinating labor resources, determining materials quantity and delivery, staying current on communication between subcontractors, owner, site engineer, etc., and ensuring timecards, logs, estimates, and necessary reports are completed on time. Oversees crew mobilization, moves, etc. Acts as liaison between clients, project managers, and superintendents. Participates in activities necessary to close each job appropriately.
Leadership : Remains informed of progress on all jobs assigned and instructs Superintendents on issues and areas of concern. Ensures proper authorizations are obtained before beginning work on extras and change orders. Controls and monitors all change orders and extra work orders to ensure field completion. Produces and communicates the Workforce Schedule for projects to keep division crews active and balanced. Tracks project budgets and works to complete projects within the assigned budget. Manages field personnel in a fair and equitable manner. Addresses performance issues as they occur. Regularly completes daily reports to record associates' performance. Oversees team dynamics for maximum productivity, quality, and safety. Supports and participates in training. Ensures all crews are trained properly in safety, skill, and supervisory skills where applicable. Participates in meetings to discuss project start up and future plans. Prepares and participates in regular job site meetings throughout the project. Assures that Veit's Leadership is informed on all matters of relative importance.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Experience : Minimum of five years as a Superintendent overseeing construction projects, preferably in construction or equivalent combination of experience and education. Certifications : HAZWOPER, OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour, Pipelayer's Card, Excavation Safety Training, Confined Space Entry, Blueprint Reading, CPR, and First Aid certifications-or the ability to obtain them. Technical Proficiency : Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, iPad and iPhone applications. Analytical Skills : Ability to read, interpret, and analyze policies, reports, construction plans, specifications, and legal documents. Project Coordination : Strong ability to communicate and coordinate project needs effectively. Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with employees, clients, and business associates. Must be able to give clear directions and respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, and industry professionals. Public Speaking & Presentation : Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to address individuals and large groups, including top management.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Working knowledge of HCSS Software Suites, PlanGrid, and PowerBI are preferred but not required.
Supervisory Responsibility : Provides leadership, supervision, and mentorship to team members, ensuring their development through guidance, training, and performance evaluations to maintain high efficiency and effectiveness. Responsible for hiring, training, and developing direct reports, conducting regular performance reviews, and taking timely disciplinary action in accordance with company policy when necessary.
Other : Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check. Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record. Position requires 8 to 10-hour workdays and occasional weekends, as needed. Must be over the age of 18. Union affiliation or willingness to join the union if necessary. Requires travel throughout the United States (100%) This role is a safety sensitive role.

Work Environment : The work environment characteristics described here represent those employees may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is exposed to environmental conditions, working near machines, and loud noises associated with construction sites. Exposed to variable weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat. Also exposed to variable terrain.Exposure to dust, dirt, loud noises, heavy machinery, and construction hazards. Requires ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and high-visibility vests for extended periods.
