Job Title : Director of Human Resources

Reports To : Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Direct Reports : None – may work with an outside HR Consultant

Compensation : Salaried (Exempt)

Location : On-Site Daily (Detroit, MI)

Position Summary

The Director of HR serves as a key member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and oversight of all human resources strategies, functions, and initiatives at Covenant House Michigan (CHMI). The HR Director ensures that HR programs, practices, and policies are aligned with CHMI's mission of serving at-risk youth and supporting the organization's strategic objectives.

This position directs and oversees all aspects of the Human Resources Department including recruitment, employee engagement, training and development, compensation and benefits, compliance, performance management, and organizational culture. The Director of HR acts as a strategic business partner to the CEO and leadership team, driving an environment that fosters trust, inclusion, professional growth, and accountability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Human Resources function to ensure effective service delivery across all HR functions.
  • Work with and provide directions to outside HR consultant to accomplish some HR functions for the organization.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, executive team, and managers on workforce planning, employee relations, and organizational development.
  • Talent Acquisition & Retention
  • Oversee recruitment and selection strategies to attract, hire, and retain top talent utilizing a variety of resources including job boards, college career offices and community resources and relationships.
  • Design and implement programs to reduce turnover, improve employee engagement, and support long-term retention.
  • Ensure recruitment practices align with CHMI's values of empathy, equality, and empowerment.
  • Compliance & Risk Management
  • Maintain current knowledge of employment laws, industry regulations, and best practices; ensure organizational compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Partner with legal counsel, as appropriate, to manage employment-related risks and sensitive personnel matters.
  • Employee Engagement & Culture
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture.
  • Develop initiatives to strengthen employee morale, build trust, and encourage collaboration.
  • Act as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
  • Training & Development
  • Oversee the design and implementation of employee training programs that enhance skills, support professional growth, and meet regulatory or programmatic requirements.
  • Support leadership development initiatives to strengthen CHMI's management and supervisory capacity.
  • Performance & Compensation Management
  • Administer the annual performance management program, ensuring fair and consistent feedback practices.
  • Collaborate with leadership and the CEO to administer CHMI's compensation and benefits program, ensuring competitive, equitable, and sustainable offerings.
  • Strategic HR Planning
  • Develop and implement HR strategies that support CHMI's long-term goals and operational needs.
  • Establish measurable HR metrics and reporting systems to assess organizational effectiveness.
  • Align HR initiatives with CHMI's mission and values, ensuring the workforce is equipped to deliver high-quality services.
  • Other Duties
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the CEO in support of CHMI's mission.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; master's degree or SHRM- SCP, HRCI – SPHR Certification preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive HR experience with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector or human services environment preferred.
  • Experience with Paycor (payroll and HRIS) and / or Employee Navigator preferred.
  • Proficiency and productivity software (MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and compliance requirements.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate organizational goals into effective HR initiatives.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professional integrity.

  • Must exemplify CHMI's values of compassion, service, and respect in all interactions.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to CHMI's Grand Rapids campus as needed to support employees at that location as well. Travel is typically day travel and overnights are not generally required.
  • Must work as part of the leadership team to support CHMI in special events supporting CHMI's mission and fundraising throughout the year (Night of Detroit Stars and Sleep Out, and any others that may be developed).

  • Physical Demands

  • Frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop and kneel.
  • May occasionally be required to lift to 10 pounds.
  • Work Environment

  • Standard office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Occasional travel to CHMI program sites, community events, and professional development opportunities may be required.
