POSITION SUMMARY :
The High School Counselor provides a comprehensive, developmental counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and social / emotional development of all students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and community partners to support student success in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) standards.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Academic Development
- Advise students on course selection, scheduling, and graduation requirements per Pennsylvania Department of Education guidelines.
- Monitor student academic progress and collaborate with teachers to identify and support at-risk students.
- Coordinate academic intervention strategies, including tutoring, credit recovery, and academic support plans.
- Assist with the implementation and review of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans, and Student Assistance Programs (SAP).
2. Career Development
Implement a comprehensive career readiness program aligned with Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards.Guide students through post-secondary planning, including college, military, trade, and workforce pathways.Support administration in managing tools such as Career Readiness Indicators, Career Portfolios, and PDE Future Ready Index requirements.Facilitate college and career fairs, job shadowing, internships, and dual enrollment opportunities.3. Social / Emotional Development
Provide individual and group counseling addressing personal, social, and behavioral concerns.Support crisis intervention, threat assessment, and conflict resolution in collaboration with the administrative and mental health teams.Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate that fosters positive student relationships and social responsibility.Serve as a liaison between school, families, and outside mental health or social service agencies.4. Program Management and Collaboration
Develop, implement, and evaluate the school counseling program annually based on data and student outcomes.Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with FERPA and district policy.Participate in multidisciplinary teams including SAP, MTSS, PBIS, and attendance improvement initiatives.Collaborate with staff on initiatives that support student attendance, engagement, and overall well-being.Contribute to schoolwide programs promoting academic excellence, equity, and access for all students.QUALIFICATIONS, CRITICAL SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education : Masters Degree in School Counseling or related field.Certification : Valid Pennsylvania Educational Specialist Certificate School Counselor PK12.Experience : Previous counseling experience at the secondary level preferred.Skills and Competencies :Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive counseling.Proficiency in student data systems (e.g., Sapphire, PowerSchool, Naviance, etc.).Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic school environment.Working ConditionsWorks primarily in a school setting with frequent interaction with students, parents, and staff.
Requires flexible scheduling for evening events (parent nights, scheduling, etc.).PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
