Job Duties :
The primary purpose of the Vice Chair of the Biomedical Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to support the Chair in ensuring the ethical and compliant review of human subjects research. The Vice Chair may preside over IRB meetings in the Chair’s absence, assist in protocol reviews, provide leadership to IRB members, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the human research protections program.
The Vice Chair will be responsible for conducting formal reviews for IRB submissions of all types and at all levels of review received by the UMCIRB. This position will ensure submissions are complete and will have the authority to grant approvals to items at the expedited and exempt review level that meet the requirements as defined by federal regulations and institutional policy. The Vice Chair will also be tasked with working with UMCIRB staff to ensure investigators modify submissions to be compliant with these requirements when necessary. Through these activities, the Vice Chair helps ensure that the University’s human research activities are compliant with institutional SOPs and international, federal, state, and local rules and regulations, and the ethical principles regarding the involvement of humans in research to protect their safety, rights, and welfare.
The position requires significant knowledge of federal regulations on human subjects research and the ability to interpret those regulations on a wide range of research disciplines. The position will work closely with other staff, investigators with varying levels of experience, and administrative leaders to support the human research enterprise.
Support UMCIRB Regulatory Oversight – 100%
